My family and I recently moved to Virginia from New York. Our son's birthday is coming up, and I am looking for a good bakery. Nothing too pricey...he's going to be 4...anything with sugar would do, but we would like to enjoy a piece as well.

    Thanks

If you want a good price, you can order a nice sheet cake at Costco. It tastes actually pretty good, all things considered.

Cold Stone Cremery's ice cream cakes are a big hit with kids, and delicious for us too!

I'm from NJ, you're not going to find good bakeries here like in NY. The "bakeries" are few and far between and people mostly use the supermarkets for everything here, bakery, butcher, etc.... Getting used to the food differences here is a shocker, but it's a great area, esp. for kids. Anyway, I would suggest getting a nice cake from Wegmans.

Wegman's is the closest you'll get.

pignoli cookies are made with almond paste and pine nuts- simple and simply delicious!

rainbow cookies are colorful layered cookies- i don't know what's in them- they might be almond paste based as well- but they are at every event with my husband's Brooklyn-born family.

too much work on rainbow cookies- i'll stick to pignolis- sooo easy!

back ON topic- if you want a European style bakery, Cafe Rumi is amazing- the cakes may be kind of fancy for a 4 year old, but the brownies.... ooh sooo gooood.... i'm drooling like homer Simpson on my keyboard! they have gelato and smoothies too--- if you want to be a bit untraditional for the birthday!

Good luck. We have lived in NY, NJ, and Chicago and there are no bakeries like those here. The closest I have found is Cenan's in Vienna. You will find yourself making it a point to go to the bakery when you go back home.

In terms of cakes, try Chantel's off of Sterling Blvd and Rt. 28. There are a couple of other threads on this topic here.

Thanks everybody....I appreciate all your opinions. Re: pizza....after weeks of trying different locations, we finally found one that is edible. Broadlands Pizza...thin...light on the cheese....very well done. It's not like home, but it's not half bad.
