Can we just start out earlier again? getting out of school late in June is awful. Perhaps so that the kids could take exams before Winter break, instead of being out for 8 days and coming back to them?

No child should be imprisoned behind school walls past Memorial Day. They can learn far more in the real world and need to explore more...not sit, passively listen to lectures and then recall information. Even most teachers are toast by June!

For those interested in starting school before Labor Day and/or ending earlier in June, one inhibiting factor to keep in mind is the "King's Dominion Law" passed by the General Assembly back in the early 1990s, which prohibits local school districts in Virginia from starting school before Labor Day. The only exceptions are for districts which have lost a certain number of days due to inclement weather in five of the past ten years (it's not a straightforward formula). Loudoun lost our "snow exemption" to the Kings Dominion law a few years ago due to mild winters in recent years. I asked what it would take to regain it and the answer was we'd have to lose eight days due to weather this year in order for LCPS to start the 2009-2010 school year prior to Labor Day if the Board chose to do so. The Loudoun County School Board has taken a position supporting legislation in the General Assembly that would allow local school boards to set their own calendar without such restrictions (which might give us more options to consider in order for school to let out earlier in June, etc.)
