This afternoon as I was exiting a building, a teenager was entering through the same door. When he saw me, he immediately went back through the door and held it open for me so I could go first. He didn't look particurlary "clean cut" with longer hair, wearing gray and black and an earphones on but it reiterated to me you can never judge a book by it's cover. There are wonderful kids out there and if you are the parents of this teen, I want to say to you, "nice job". I hope my boys will exhibit the same manners when they grow older (they are 7,5,3 right now and it's dicey--but we are working hard on it)!

That's how we raised our two boys (25 and 27 now). When my oldest was 4, he held the door for an elderly woman, and boy did she gush all over him. I'm always happy to see some parents are teaching their children manners. It gets really old to hear men of all ages say, women don't hold doors for me so why should I hold them for them? And yes, I've heard that sentiment. BTW, I'm a woman and it amazes me when a man rushes through in front of me or lets the door shut in my face. All I can think, is, is chivalry dead?:rolleyes3:

Wonderful reminder that we do have some great kids here and that parents raising well mannered ladies & gentleman do exist on ashburn!

That is so nice. I always hold doors for people, no matter age, gender. Was taught that was the polite thing to do. Its a shame that the majority of the people breeze right by me without so much as a look, or, god-forbid a thank you. Manners go both ways. Say thank you to the people who go out of their way to be polite.

We happen to be at Kettler iceplex for my older sons hockey game a few months ago. When we were leaving, both of my boys (younger 9 and older 15) held the doors for people leaving- one held the outer door and one the inner door. There just happen to be a gaggle of people leaving at once, so they stood and held the doors. The last guy out happen to be a Capitals player. He stopped me and asked if those were my boys and i said yes- he said that I was raising outstanding youngmen! (i of course had no idea this was a Caps player- but my boys ran over to me to find out what he said- since they knew who he was). It was exciting for them to be noticed by someone of importance.
I was just happy they were using manners and held the doors. :)

I overhead a conversation between two women were one said she held the door for some woman and when she didn't get acknowledged she said "you're welcome" within earshot of the person who breezed through. The women turned around and asked her if she only held doors to be thanked :screwy: Some people were never taught good manners growing up!

NICE. i would have loved to retort "No, I only hold doors open for people with good manners. CLEARLY I made a mistake this time- SORRY."
