Apollo 11 lifted off for the first manned landing on the moon.

I remember being glued to the TV since 5:00am watching this.

It was one of the coolest things I have witnessed in my life.

And, of course, a thread like this would not be complete without the usual Ozgood, who gives a crap, trivial question.:boring:

The race to the moon was still going during the Apollo 11 mission. What was Apollo 11 racing against and why?

My hero is Buzz Aldrin! I had the privilege of meeting him in 1976, although I don't remember it much I have pictures to prove it.

On a side note, my wife was born in August of 1969 and was almost named 'Luna' - so glad she wasn't ;-)

You must mean the Russian Luna-15 spacecraft 'crash landing' onto the surface of the moon, Russia's last ditch effort to land on the moon before the Americans. It crash landed at 15:50 on July 21, 1969, just a few hours before the Apollo 11 landed on the moon.

A good writeup on the Luna 15 can be found on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luna_15

The Mercury, Gemini and Apollo are my favorite era in regards to 'space exploration'. I can soak up anything related to those three projects.

CORRECTION: Since Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20, 1969 at 20:17:40 UTC, Luna 15 actually crash landed hours 'after' Apollo 11 landed. Armstrong set foot on the moon at 02:56 UTC on July 21, 1969. So Luna 15 crash landed 13 hours 'after' the first step was taken on the moon. I apologize for my mistake above.

    Ding! A winner!!

The Command Service Module (CSM) was named Columbia
The Lunar Module was named Eagle

But those were not the orginal names for those two components. In early NASA planning documents, they were named something different.. something a little less dignified to some.

I am a big Mercury and Gemini fan myself. Not so much Apollo though.

wikipedia says "Some internal NASA planning documents referred to the call signs as Snowcone and Haystack,[4] but these were quietly changed before being announced to the press."

What was Neil Armstrong's shoe size at the time he first stepped on the moon?

    Today is the day!

About 5:00pm 40 Years ago, the Eagle landed on the moon.

About 10:00 this date, Armstrong first stepped on the moon.

I remember being at the TV, mostly watching a lot of nothing, during this time. Back then we were eating this stuff up with a big spoon.

Almost a half a Billion people were watching.. About 1/6 of the entire world's population. Talk about prime time TV viewing. :)
