Okay.. this is a silly question but how are you guys able to run traceroutes? Is this on a PC or Linux box? I don't have any of my linux hosts on the Adelphia pipe yet but from the WinXP machines I can't seem to get anything out side of my local network in terms of pings and traceroutes. I thought Adelphia was maybe blocking ICMP traffic.

Ya I have the exact problem. When powerlink first came out I could trace via winxp and linux, now I can do neither. I have heard that adelphia is blocking icmp, but there is supposed to be some freeware out there that traceroutes via udp. I can ping with icmp, so I dont know what is up....:/
I havent found any udp traceroute freeware yet, havent looked for it.

what is up with the pool ny verizon crap... interesting... that router is in a netblock owned by VZ... *shrug* I'm still getting fast speeds other than some downtime yesterday... anyone else have probs yesterday? My Sb4100 wouldn't sync the upstream...

I saw that verizon hop as well. all of our traffic in this area goes through charlottesville/winchester, its possible that verizon link is some kind of backhaul between here and there. Dont know for sure.
What I do know is that my service with Adelphia has NEVER been better. I get great ping times for my gaming...:D and my downloads are now better at 3000k and uploads were increased a few months ago to 256k. Im happy with the service....[:p] and this is with almost no competition. There is Verolan and other wireless providers, but at a much higher cost with almost no better service. Nothing else is available to me but Adelphia. If fios comes out our way, then that would be a different story.

I didn't notice an outage at first. Because of the lack of monitoring on my Adelphia network the only way I can tell if there was an outage is by looking at my wifes AIM account. When I got home I noticed her session was interrupted during the day but it must have been a short outage since I didn't notice her go away from my buddy list.

Finding a router that's under $200 that supports SNMP well is next on my list if I'm going to keep this cable setup.

Would be nice if they would give us 384k up like comcast (I think)...

I used to be able to graph my SB4100 stats via SNMP, but adelphia has since disabled public SNMP :(

get an old spare box and build a bsd/linux firewall for less than $200 =)

I have plenty of spare PCs sitting around but I find the 250-350w power supply a little overkill for this task. I already had the electrician run a dedicated 20 amp circuit to my office. He thought I was half baked. :D

That's too bad Adelphia disabled SNMP. I wonder if they just changed the community sting on you? Either way I would think they could have left it open on the private side of the modem.

That's odd. Traceroute runs fine on my redhat box.

not sure if they changed the string.. .haven't tried in a while... last time I thought it just timed out... but I'm not sure if that's how SNMP handles unauthenticated requests... no worries though, I just graph my router now... CACTI is pretty neat.

Yep, confirmed it tonight. I put a second interface on one of my Linux (Core2) boxes on the Adelphia network. I updated my routing table to use the Adelphia connection for updates and still can't trace or ping outside my own little world via Adelphia. FTP/HTTP worked fine over the new interface. And traceroutes and pings to other networks work fine on the IDSL interface.

Adelphia is looking more like `the Internet on training wheels' every day. At least it's been a fast set of wheels lately and my VoIP likes the 230k upload.
