Adelphia planning dramatic rate increase

    The monthly rate for a digital set-top box will go up by about $2 rather than the expected $1, bringing the total cost for digital access alone to $8.50 in some markets. Premium packages and high-speed data services are also expected to rise more than anticipated. Basic cable rates will stay within regulatory guidelines.

    "We're doing a rate increase this year, period," one company source said. "The new management team wants us to increase it even more. I think they looked at what we were doing and looked at what other cable operators were doing, and DBS and our market, and saw some room where they can increase rates further."
