Sounds like someone who got a Hybrid just for the HOV benefits...

I don't think I am familiar with the "white turtle stickers." What are they?

I want to follow up and say that today we got our new Prius! We bought it from Fred Lutz at Miller Toyota in Manassas and were pleased with the service and price we received.

About three weeks ago when we contacted them, Miller had a group of them coming in and told me what they were and which ones were already spoken for. They had a blue one with package 2 so we gave a $200 deposit to hold it. It was supposed to arrive about a week later but was delayed. The new expected arrival date was when we would be out of town on vacation so we asked the dealer to hold it for us for a few days until we got back in town.

In the meantime, I kept checking Cars.com and our local dealers to check their stock but there simply weren't any to be had in our area - even extending the search to 100 miles or so away!

I was a little nervous that they would sell it before we got back, even though we had a deposit. The good news is that they *did* hold it for us even though they had some offers to buy it while it was waiting for us.

    Yay!

    Congratulations Villager! I ENVY YOU!!!

I've decided to wait for the 2009 model to come out, which means no Prius for me probably until January 2009 :bawling:

The benefits of the new model are making it very hard for me to justify getting a 2008 in September as I had planned. So, I'll just continue putting that 'car payment' into my savings and gather another 4 months worth of money to put toward the new car. At this rate, I'll only need a tiny loan when I buy the car!

So once again, congratulations on your new 'baby'. If you ever pass a big gas-guzzling Ford Explorer with MR LINUX plates on it, wave hello!

Thanks, we're excited to finally have it!

You may only have to wait until the Fall. The word on PriusChat and PriusOnline is that beginning June 1st you can order a 2009, which begins production this August and ships beginning in September. 2010 version begins production in April of 2009. I don't know if this is accurate, but it seems to be the general consensus.

I had a very good experience with Miller Toyota in Manassas and the Fitzmall group seemed like an upstanding dealer, too. Start calling around and see what's what with the model years and arrival dates and maybe get yourself on a list for a reserved one in your name. That seems to be the way it has to be if you want to get one - most of the Priuses (Prii?) that come in already are spoken for.

Good luck and feel free to ask me anything you want to know!

Interesting. Honda makes very good cars - maybe this version of their Insight (as opposed to the one they introduced in 1999 and later discontinued) will be a good product for them. It looks pretty much like the Prius; if the gas mileage and emissions are comparable and the price is lower than Toyota's then it should do well.

just traded my RX330 for the RX400h- great pick up but man is it a heavy car! not a huge diff on mileage- about 6-7 miles more per gallon, but the tax savings and my concern for the environment are aaal worth it! :)

Is there a place in this area (VA/MD/DC) that will do the plug in converson for the Prius?

It is something I would like to look into. Especially if they are offering Li batteries.

Another reason to buy the TDI is the $1,300 tax credit. They claim real world highway milage is more like 44 mpg. Where did you get the 60 mpg figure? I am waiting for them to come out with a Passat TDI as the Jetta is too small.

I don't have an answer about the plug-in issue but you could try checking the PriusChat forums - they're great for that kind of info.

In light of the MPG issue, in the 4 months we have owned our Prius we have averaged 52 MPG and I've never seen it below 50.

    Check my tire pressure???

Listen, if checking my tire pressure were important, I would imagine one of the Presidential candidates would have said something about it.

Here's my two cents from what I learned on the PriusChat forums:

To get the best mileage out of a hybrid, do a lot of coasting (take your foot off the accelerator) to a stop - basically plan ahead and if the light is red, take your foot off the pedal and let the car slow naturally. Of course, not so far in advance that you annoy the heck out of whoever's behind you... Remember, you don't have to accelerate up to a stoplight and then hit the brakes hard right at the end. Let the electric part do its job and glide to a stop.

You don't have to start off from a red light extremely slowly, but try not to just stomp on it and be the first one off the line. Be reasonable about it.

If you notice you're on a downhill, take your foot off the pedal and roll, baby! Most of the time you'll stay near the speed limit.

Essentially if you drive like you have a cup of scalding hot coffee in your hand you'll do well.
