After numerous phone calls to Comcast (eta in my house July-Sep) and the FIOS folks going back on their word on when it will be ready, I am looking at alternatives to the cable modem. Has anyone tried Wildblue or Hughesnet? How often would you have trouble with the services due to weather? Any other alternatives for high speed internet from a desktop? Times like this I wish I could atleast get openband, but I live in Broadlands North.

The link for wildblue is: http://www.wildblue.com/

Comcast isn't serving your house yet? I thought they had all of Broadlands north (started with Adelphia) a long time ago.

Nope I live on the new street they just put up (Mount Auburn). Though the street in front of where I live has cable, my street does not. You would think they can add cable to one street pretty easily but they are going to wait till July (September per my neighbor) before they add it to my street. This leaves us with no options right now unless you want to get satellite :(

Lets hope Verizon Fios arrives soon.

FYI.. one of my coworkers went through a similar battle with Adelphia forever waiting to get cable ... delays delays delays. Daily updates from them, etc. Eventually pressure from the home owners helped get their butt in motion because all the neighbors were scheduling their dish installs :)

Have you tried for DSL? I wonder if you are on the other side of the fiber.

You could also try for IDSL, which works over normal phone lines (it's ISDN, but always on). I had that for awhile. It's not broadband (3x modem speeds or so), but its something.

You could try getting a high gain antenna, mount it on your roof (or by a window, in the attic etc) and have a friend who does have broadband nearby share it with you doing the same setup... but they should of course check first with their provider to make sure they are not breaking any rules. There are people in the community (well there were before Adelphia came in) that did this with buying a T1 and sharing it over wireless.

You could always move to Southern Walk to get your broadband. Of course I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

I tried to get DSL but it is not available either. Not sure about the IDSL do I go through Verizon for that also?

At this time I am hoping to put some more pressure on Comcast to get in our street sooner or Verizon FIOS.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

IDSL is more expensive for an 128k connection. You'll need to try companies like DSL.net (now defunct) or Megapath. The good news with IDSL is that you get 1 (or more) static IPs for generally no charge. They tend to deal with businesses more than residential installs so the service is better. Another option may be to look into Cingular HSDPA or Verizon's EVDO. It's also expensive but you get a solution that is, in most cases, faster than iDSL and portable. You can even use an EVDO router like the one offered by Kyocera.
