Just a suggestion - but the Baltimore Aquarium at the Inner Harbor is much better and well worth the drive!!!!

The downtown DC acquarium is underground and basically one room. It's a nice break from the Mall on a hot summer day, but you can have the same experience by visiting PetSmart.

I haven't been to the DC aquarium in years, but I do remember that there was one particular crustacean that had the following description posted below it :
"Relative to the lobster. Cook in microwave."
    I am not joking.
They may have improved it, but I certainly would opt for the Baltimore Aquarium. They have sharks, stingrays, piranha, a rainforest, and an awesome jellyfish exhibit which may or may not still be there. And after you spend the day admiring how beautiful and mysterious the earth's aquatic inhabitants are, you can skip on over to Phillip's and try them with some ****tail sauce.
I also like the aquarium at Virginia Beach, the Virginia Marine Science Museum. There is a shuttle from the beach and there are a lot of hands on things for the kids to do, like pet the stingrays, touch a horseshoe crab, climb in and out and onto all of the interactive displays- but it's not just for kids. There are some awesome sharks and gators and seals. And when you're done oo-hing and ahh-ing over the IMAX aquatic experience (or in our daughter's case, crying because it was too dark and the fish were swimming among us), you can catch a bus to Rudee's and sit on a porch swing table outside with your family and enjoy some of those fish you just rubbed fins with con some melted butter. MMMMM! Cook in microwave indeed!

    That's very funny!!!

I ditto the comparison of the Aquarium to Petsmart. There are a thousand different places in DC to go to before the DC Aquarium.

Baltimore Aquarium is awesome. The line can get long, but tickets can be pre-purchased from Ticketmaster. A great convenience.

Another very nice aquarium is in the outerbanks. I believe it is in Maneo, but welcome clarification or validation.

Thanks for all the reviews. I have taken this 'attraction' off my list of things to see.

Looks like its nothing more sophisticated than a pattern match. Does not look for its usage or surroundings.

We went to the Baltimore Aquarium yesterday. It is now showing a special dolphin show which is well worth seeing.
