Is there anyone here who's not working for AOL but has the dialup service in the Broadlands?

Someone might, but I doubt they'll admit it.

I'd like to know if any suckers^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hbody actually has AOL for broadband. I can't fathom the rationale behind paying for broadband AND AOL to run on top of it.

The reason I ask is that there is a broadband trial being offered in our area but it's for subscibers. If anyone is interested let me know. You have to live in Ashburn for this trial. And for the record, if you look at my profile you'll see an aol address even though I also host my own mail server. ;)

aol would have its benefits for non-techie users.. because of the bundling of services, software, etc. But of course its not for the user who would rather do things on their own.

Alot of my senior customers use AOL because of its ease of use. Its all in one location, no separate programs to use (Outlook or Outlook Express ... UGH). I do advise them that if they get cable broadband and want to keep AOL, they move to the lower cost option of the BYOB level. I believe that's $15 or $16 a month, vs $24 for dialup.

However, if they go to DSL, I suggest they go to the full Verizon with MSN, as it has many of the same ease-of-use capablities, and they'll save money as its bundled with DSL.

On another note ... Pictor Guy, who are they teaming with to offer broadband, and what does that FCC ruling last week mean for the future of AOL offering broadband ??

Another FYI... if you want to use Outlook or any other IMAP client you can with AOL. Not to mention that the spam filters are very good and you have unlimited mail storage with AOL and I think 2GB storage with AIM.com mail.

Back to the trial... if you have a BYOA Broadband account you should still be able to participate in the trial.

Neil's thinking it's already Friday with the BYOB. :p

Shoot ... I thought it was called Bring Your Own Broadband [:p]

Do you have to be in the Broadlands, I know someone on AOL who may qualify for the trial in Ashburn Farm.

Not 100% sure what the area is but 20148 and 20147 *should* be able to do it. So Ashburn Farm should qualify but YMMV.

I have been on the wireless AOL Broadband trial for the past four months. You receive a kit that contains a window mount antenna and a broadband modem. After mounting the antenna to your window, there is a cable that runs from the antenna to the modem. The modem then has a CAT5 output which you use to connect to your PC with AOL.

Aside from the high geek factor, I'd rather just connect to AOL using my Adelphia broadband connection.

I sent you mail on how to find out more. Best I can tell it's not using anything in the 2.4GHz range and will offer DSL speeds over a wireless connection.

More on the coverage in the Ashburn area. I can say it seems to work fine in Broadlands in the area just North of Hillside. :)
