You thought the forums destroyed your productivity? Try this:

    maps.live.com

The photos are much newer than Google Earth AND you can actually see your target from four different angles. It can be a bit frustrating at first, but mess around with it and see how it goes!

the map source varies by sites.

For instance.. I use live.com for the closest views.. but usually prefer google for aerial shots.

However I have found yahoo lately has sat images where Google doesn't. Just can't tell until you try :)

The 3/4 view is cool on live.com

If you zoom in on Broadlands, you see old imagery that shows where the trees were before construction - and it explains why there are so few trees in Broadlands South compared to Broadlands North.

Switch to 2D. Its photographic rather than historical.

Interesting stuff! I use Google Maps a lot, and their aerial shots are neither brand new nor so old that they have images of undeveloped areas... rather, their stuff is pretty much uniform and fairly recent (i.e., 3 to 5 years old).

What I find particularly amusing about the Microsoft Live Search is the juxtaposition of super old and super new, especially in Ashburn Farm. For example, the relatively new Cedar Lane Elementary school is shown in its full glory in great detail and in full color. Meanwhile, the site of the (relatively) venerable Sanders Corner Elementary is low-res, black and white, and nothing but trees!

The zoom feature is better than on Google Maps, so much so that I was able to determine that some homeowner at the end of a cul-de-sac named Rostormel Ct. (off Timberbrook Place; west of Ashburn Road) has built a sport court in the wilderness behind his house. Nice!

Check out the ancient aerial shots of the Broadlands area. It's like a visual history lesson.

Hrmmm... m'thinks thy settings be off a wee tad! Go back to Sander's Corner, make certain you are on "2D" and Bird's Eye View. I'm looking at a wonderful hi-res photo or dear ol' Sanders AND my old townhouse.

    Clicking here MIGHT work

Oh, and for some real fun, look in on the Pentagon, then pan to the right and try to look in on the Capitol & the White House. ;)

On maps.live.com the photographs around Brambleton/Broadlands are about a year old only. Satellite imagery for both Google and live.com is roughly 5-6 years old around Brambleton/Ashburn, but live.com is strangely very dated over the Broadlands.

A cool site for combining maps/satellite with running/road course mapping is http://www.usatf.org/routes/map/. You can do many cool things with that.

I don't know what you all are talking about but the image I get of my home is identical to google maps which is 5 years old.

Yea, for me in the townhomes section near Vestals and Claiborne, Google Maps has the most up to date images; about 2-3 years old maybe.
