Atlantic Tanning has closed it's doors. My daughter worked there and recieved a text last night that they have gone out of business. That makes about 5 open spaces in the Safeway shopping center shopping center.

wow - that's an interesting one.. a bit different because the area isn't flooded with those types of stores like some of the resturants, etc. Wonder if the lease rates were just insane at that shopping center. maybe vince can chime in :)

I wonder how much the rents are in these types of strip malls?

Anyone know a ball park figure? I am sure it is terrible.

We were talking to a manager of a store in one of the shopping malls (which I assume are more expensive to rent), he told us that his rent was $22,000 per month and that that was a pretty low number.

as a black woman i can honestly say this was not a buisiness that i found a use for... lol

but seriously- doesn't tanning have a bad rep right now with health risks? could that be part of it? plus, doesn't every family in the Broadlands vacation in the islands at least once a year, therefore using the ACTUAL sun for a tan?

I think it has more to do with folks being more conscious about skin hazards, etc. Today, most folks are more concerned about protecting their skin, than having that deep, dark tan. Smaller customer-base doesn't bode well for businesses such as tanning salons. Less customers and high monthly operating costs don't usually add to the survivability of a business, regardless of how much of a niche the business is or the competition you're up against.

i think there's way too many tanning places in this area, and i'm surprised that more of them haven't gone out of business sooner.

i was looking at office space about 1.5 years ago and i know one of those units was over $6k/month and that's just the lease. back then the average for retail in the area between $34-40/sq. ft. if i remember correctly.

I think its safe to say we still have plenty more people that are more worried about their looks then we are about their health :)

But with Broadlands being more family oriented and not as much rental space around.. the area may be weak in the young adult demographic they rely on.

I can tell you it was night and day seeing the different types of tennents living in the apartments vs who were living even in the townhomes. Not in a bad way, but certainly people at different stages in their life.

I know the taekwondo place in the Safeway shopping center has a rent of over $16,000/month.

For ashburn village it was around 5k a month rent.

There is a tanning salon in every strip mall (well used to be, one that I started folded and now Atlantic tanning).

I think it was more of a management thing, than lack of business. The Sterling store also closed down. This kind of job drew employees that wanted to tan for free, so mostly college and high school girls. The employees, IMHO, didn't always seem to be reliable. The owner didn't live close. Plenty of people lost money on the packages they bought and now can't use. I don't even think there is a note on the door saying they are closed yet or how to redeem your prepaid packages.

I noticed several weeks ago that all the stuff in the front had been removed, and there was no activity at the store at all. But your daughter just received the text yesterday? Did she only work occasionally?

    LKelly,
the last month or so things have been kinda crazy there. people quitting with no notice (as in didn't show up to open the store then texting owner and saying they quit), store closed becoz someone was sick and there was no coverage, etc... my daughter was working 3 - 4 days, up until about two weeks ago. one day when i took her to work, there were 5 people waiting for her to open the store.
