I still get sad the way I did as a kid when summer ends and it's time to go back to school :) Ahhhh, hate to see summer end, but enjoying this cooler weather at night.

Anyway, we have a couple children with learning difficulties and ADHD. I remember seeing some flyers or ads about a local organization that coaches kids with ADHD, hosts Camps, does Workshops for parents, etc.

Does anyone know of a local resource that can help? Want to get the new school year off to a good start! Thanks much.

Regarding ADHD help--have you tried an IEP (Individual Education Program)? One of my sons has Aspergers--a mild form of autism--has an IEP. It is a legal document that guarantees your child gets his needs met with Special Ed. Without the IEP--kids don't always get the services they need. It opens doors for more than the school will tell you about. Dr. Arnold Small of Reston Psychological Center will be an excellent resource for independent evaluations, etc.

You can call Child Find (a national education Special Ed service) offered with all public schools nationwide. Have your child tested, etc. and match the Special Ed's evaluations with an independent assessment for best results.

Because we had an IEP which encompasses the No Child Left Behind act portion for free and appropriate education--the schools have to abide by federal laws, etc. The principal at my son's former public school (he is now in private school with the rest of the quads) did not want to implement IEP. So we used the IEP as a tool to have him removed to a better suited school. An IEP benchmarks goals, etc. for a tailored education for your child. Services are free, testing, etc.

If needed--speech therapy can be one example. My son was academically advanced and was not given appropriate curriculum as stated in his IEP. Other issues were not addressed either appropriately. So we were able to remove him to a better school.

You can also check out www.autism-society.org. Autism Society of America's web site for Northern Virginia is www.asa-nv.org. for info.

Good luck. Any questions email me at Broadlands forum. I am a food scientist hence food dr as user name. I will call or email you gladly for other info.

The number for Child Find in Loudoun County is 703-771-6476 but I believe they only handle preschoolers. However, they can point you in the right direction for older children who are usually referred by their teachers if IEPs/504 plans are not already implemented.

The folks at the Parent Resource Center (703-771-6765) also are extremely knowledgeable and can help a lot with questions about how special education works within the county and have many contacts for other resources within the community.

Of course, you can always call over to the admin building and talk with Special Education directly at 571-252-1011.

Thanks so much for your help. We have spoken with Child Find and also met with the Celebrate!ADHD folks. We are now in the process of testing and developing the IEP for academic needs, and we're going to use Celebrate!ADHD to help build confidence and relationships. Checked out multiple references and looks like we've got a really unique organization right here in Broadlands, fortunately. Thanks again for everyone's help!
