I emailed Real Estate Group with Whole Foods to convey my interest in them taking over the store.

    This was the reply:
Too many grocery stores in the area, like Wegmans and Harris Teeter, to make money. The rep said make the drive to Fairfax or Reston!

I say that is too bad!!!! Shopping at Whole Foods is not a frivolous option for me, but out of health necessity. Wegmans has some, but not all I need for a whole diet. Bummer!

I visited Bloom in Leesburg (near the Outlets) yesterday for some onions - they have quite an extensive whole foods section that even include Quinoa - now you try finding quinoa in Wegmans.

And it's quite ridiculous to expect folks to suffer the tolls to go to Reston or Fairfax - get out of here. I have a feeling that lot will stay empty for a while.

What do you think contributed to its failure? The brand, the location, the competition, saturation?

Honestly, Wegmans is usually sold out of Quinoa when I go. They don't quite have as much as GlutenFreeMall.com, where I like to shop often.

Bloom probably suffered because it is not too visible from the road and is a convenience shop for those in the neighborhood, there are too many general grociers in the area. Yes, like Giant, HarrisTeeter, Safeway, etc. We don't need more of those, but even a Trader Joes would be nice...

I can find quinoa at Wegmans, and heck... even H.T. carries it!!

That said... I think that even though we do have WAY more than our share of grocery stores here, Trader Joes would still make a killing.

oh dear - clearly I am out of touch on the quinoa front - I found quinoa flour at Wegmans but not the "grain". Glad I'm not the only one in search of this golden grain (that costs a fortune)

I've gotten quinoa at Harris Teeter. I think it's just past the rice and before the beans. I also like it as a Scrabble word.

Wow, that is really amazing for a chain store like Bloom to close so quickly after just opening, especially in a brand new plaza like that. We talk about it all the time on this forum with so many grocery stores in such close proximity to one another not to mention two Wegman's on to the West and East of Ashburn. Pretty soon there will be 6 Harris Teeter's serving the Ashburn area (Landsdowne, Ash Village, Broadlands, Brambleton, Goose Creek Village and Moorefield Station), three Giants (Ash Farm, AV and over by the Greenway - which by the way is a very nice store that is never crowded), Safeway, Bloom near Farmwell Hunt, etc.. I would expect the Safeway to be the next likeliest to close.

Safeway is 1 mile from MY house but I have no problem going to 4 miles to Wegmans- Safeway IS THAT BAD. :shakehead: i would have been bummed though, back in the day when safeway WAS a decent place to shop. i like bloom so I understand your bummed-ness.

Keep in mind that this particular Bloom store used to be a Food Lion. It was failing miserably as a Food Lion and corporate decided to try rolling in their 'Bloom' concept, hoping to garner more business, etc. It didn't work. So yea, 'Bloom' has been there for about 18 months, but deep inside, it was the same old 'Food Lion' that many people simply weren't interested in shopping at...

As for the Broadlands Safeway, I'm personally still amazed that they're still there. They have some of the worst produce in the area, crappy prices, limited checkout lanes, etc. I could go on and on... Most folks in Broadlands just use it like a 'quickie-mart' whenever they need something quick and don't want to drive too far, like maybe to grab some paper plates, or a jug of milk, etc. Part of me thinks that their gas station is probably their main source of revenue right now...

Many forum regulars have MANY horror stories about this Safeway. Many of us have even voiced our complaints to management, including calling their regional office. Not much has changed, so we simply don't shop there anymore, which is a shame, since its closing would impact some other great businesses in that plaza...

If this is the same store I'm thinking of, it wasn't a Food Lion; it was woods... brand new building in a brand new plaza.

Aren't we talking about the Bloom in the plaza where the Taco Bell/KFC and CVS are located?
