So I was going through my personal mailing list and noticed some people wrote their addresses as Broadlands, 20148 instead of Ashburn, 20148. Also some Brambleton, 20148. I noticed the use of Lansdowne instead of Leesburg too.

Is this a "trend"? Are more people doing this now? What's wrong with using Leesburg, Ashburn, or Sterling? Guess it doesn't matter with the USPS since there's a zip.

I wonder if there's someone writing their address as Village of Waxpool, 20148? :)

    Just thought is was odd.

I think either on this board or on brambletonian there is a discussion from a few years ago. The concensus was when you want to feel upper class you use "Broadlands" or Brambleton. I used to do that for the novelty of saying "Broadlands" then I realized Ashburn is shorter, thus a time saver to use :)

I believe the post office has actually changed the area to Broadlands for the zipcode 20148.

If you check USPS.gov, Broadlands is the correct city code for zip 20148.

According to USPS (straight from their website):

    Actual City name in 20148

    ASHBURN, VA [IMG]

    Acceptable City names in 20148

    ARCOLA, VA [IMG]
    BRAMBLETON, VA [IMG]
    BROADLANDS, VA

Broadlands is correct, per USPS, at least for my address.

If I put my address in at http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp using "Ashburn" as the city, their website will correct it to "Broadlands".

many of the automatic address validation systems push broadlands back at you. I've started changing some of my Credit cards, etc simply to prevent mismatches.

We just moved to a new location in Broadlands....when we went to turn on our utillities we gave our address as Ashburn, 20148 and each and every company said our address was not recognized....when it was changed to Broadlands, 20148, it was. That's the only reason we've begun using it for everything. We moved just a few miles down the road from a townhome in Ashburn, 20148 and never had a problem with it, it was only when we moved this time. We've also experienced this problem when ordering things online, our address is not recognized as being in Ashburn.

I forgot the extra four numbers in the zip. Guess that would narrow it down too.

We got a post card from the post office quite a while back that 20148 is now considered Broadlands. Everyone should have gotten the same.

for the zip code 20148, these are the cities that USPS recognizes:

    ASHBURN, VA [IMG]
    ARCOLA, VA [IMG]
    BRAMBLETON, VA [IMG]
    BROADLANDS, VA

and as Magzinger stated the sub zip is what decides where the parcel/ package will go to.

Although what I found out, if you give directions to someone it is always better to use Ashburn as 9 times out of 10 they will say," my GPS doesn't see it.":)

In January 2006, the post office officially designated that 20147 would include Ashburn and the older part of Broadlands. From the other side of Waxpool down would be 20148 (Southern Walk, Brambleton, etc. It has taken quite while for variuos companies to "Get It". Online some vendors will have 20148, some will have 20147. Post office said at the time the change was made, that 20147 would still get mail to Southern Walk. I use Broadlands 20148. My MIL used to be in Leisure World. She tried to use Lansdowne but was corrected to use Leesburg 20176.

Not quite correct. The ONLY part of Broadlands that cannot use "Broadlands, VA" is the portion that is in the 20147 zip code. And the only section this applies to is the Overland Park section.
The rest of "older" Broadlands is in 20148 and uses "Broadlands, VA."

The Brambleton, VA designation was acceptable when I moved to Brambleton in 2003. The developers of Brambleton sought that out and I remember there being info about it in their promotional materials at the time. When we moved here in 2003, most address validation systems would only accept Ashburn and not Brambleton. It's now changed and I'm finding it validated to Brambleton if I put in Ashburn.

I have recently had trouble with online vendors with this. I live in 20148.

My blockbuster account defaults to Broadlands as the city. My American Express Card (AMEX) account defaults to Ashburn.

When I try to use my AMEX card on the Blockbuster site (not the store but the website), it cannot process the charge since the city for my blockbuster account does not match the city for my AMEX card.

I have seen this on other online vendors where they change the city to match the zip prior to processing it to AMEX and I get that the card will not process so I have to switch to my Visa/Mastercard.

I believe the core issue is that AMEX has not switched yet to Broadlands as the city and will not accept "Broadlands" as the city.

Guess I need to pay attention and get out more. :)

Lived in Ashburn for a few years then moved into Broadlands at the beginning. Just been using Ashburn all this time.
