Do users get to own the equipment? My interest is luke warm for $60/month. What kind of support will the service provide. Is there someone to call at 3am if the internet goes down?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is you will own the equipment, but while you are using the service I can not give you the password to the Subscriber Unit. That would allow you access to some of the network security information as well as the throttling settings. As soon as you terminate service, I will reset the device to factory settings and it is yours to do with as you please. As for the support, I am it, remember I am not trying to make a profit, just recoupe some of my expenses. I will try to be available as close to 24x7 as possible, including 3am, but there might be some times it will take me 12 - 24 hours to respond. If I am going to be unavailable for an extended period of time, I have a backup support person identified.

On a side note, I am finishing the set up of the BroadlandsWireless forums page. It should be done in a day or two. Once it is up and running we should move these types of questions over there. I will post back as soon as it is up and running.

One more thing to note. There is no annual contract. The service will be month to month, cancel anytime.

Is it correct to assume that users would be on their own to secure email and usenet services?

For email you are correct. At this time I don't have the hardware to run an email server for everyone. Although, if you purchase the Power User plan you are more than welcome to run your own email server. I will even host your DNS records for free.

As for Usenet you will have access to Atlantech's Usenet servers.

I've got my own domain on a remote server and a dozen e-mail accounts. All I need is POP/SMTP access. Will this work?

Also, what is the advantage of this setup as opposed to the VeroLAN service?

(I just closed on the house yesterday and move in next week.)

James, congrats on the closing! Let me be one of the first to welcome you to Broadlands! When you get some time give me a call at 703-727-0832 and we can talk.

It sounds like there would be no problems. There are advantages for VeroLAN just as there are advantages for my service. Khalil at VeroLAN is a great guy to work with. Upsides are that they provide web space, provide email accounts and allow hosting. But for me the downsides were; annual contract, they own the firewall at your premisis, log all your activity, don't give you access to the firewall to configure port forwarding, and they lowered the uplink speed.

As for my service the downsides are; no provided email accounts, no web space, and I don't provide you with a firewall(you need to provide your own if you want one). But the upsides are; full T1 speeds, upload and download both 1.544Mbit, no contract (you pay month to month, cancel anytime), host anything but spam servers, I don't log anything, and I am not a big company so I am flexable with individual requests.

    Hope that helps!

Just want to respond to the port forwarding issue you mentioned. Install your own router, have the Verolan router forward (DMZ) all ports to it. That's what I did. Verolan does not have access to my internal router (nor will they).
