Except Firefox and Avant, are there any othere browsers that are better? Firefox has been awesome, but with new stuff coming out all the time there might be something better out there.

"Better" is relative. Have you tried Mozilla or Netscape? They use the same engine as Firefox but have more features (if you need them) and there is also Opera.

Google is supposedly making a new browser to beat them all. TEchnologyreview.com reported that Google hired the creator of Firefox and has bought Mozilla. Neither party would comment on the idea. Look for Google to come out with one in the next year or so. I think its called Googlefox.

Right now I use Firefox on WinXP and Linux.

I don't see how Google (or anyone for that matter) could buy Mozilla considering they are "protected" by a non-profit corporation called The Mozilla Foundation which supports the open source project. Here is a blurb taken from the Mozilla Foundation website at http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/

"Established in July, 2003, with start-up support from America Online's Netscape division, the Mozilla Foundation exists to provide organizational, legal, and financial support for the Mozilla open-source software project. The Foundation has been incorporated as a California not-for-profit corporation to ensure that the Mozilla project continues to exist beyond the participation of individual volunteers, to enable contributions of intellectual property and funds and to provide a vehicle for limiting legal exposure while participating in open-source software projects."

The whole history of the Mozilla project and how it relates to Firefox is actually a pretty good read. There is a decent explanation of the events at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla

What I found interesting, was that AOL funded a large amount of the initial development of Mozilla - even though the project was open source, AOL had developers that were being paid to work on the project.

In hind sight, this was a great move for the Mozilla project judging by its success. The concept of a company funding, supporting, and protecting the development of an open source project is a great way to get quality software out there, while still appeasing the open source community.

Where do you think the Mozilla code came from? Ever notice that Netscape 6 and above share the same engine as Mozilla and Firefox?

Has anyone tried this with firefox?:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

    network.http.pipelining
    network.http.proxy.pipelining
    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

    2. Alter the entries as follows:

    Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

    Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

    3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

FWIW ... this also works with the latest versions of Mozilla, if you need a browser suite (browser, email, newsreader).
