Although they've been disappointing as of late...they are not out of ANYTHING yet. Think they'll make any moves before the trade deadline at 3pm today? My gut says no, but MAN would I love to see a Brian McCabe, Rob Blake or a Marion Hossa in DC. Not McPhee's M.O....but who knows. They've surprised us this year so far!

I hope they don't make a move (unless someone is prepared to give them a player without the expectation of a regular player/prospects in return). If they can land a steady (doesn't need to be spectacular) goaltender in the offseason (Huet in Montreal is a UFA, I believe), they will be formidable next season. They just cannot go into another season with Kolzig/Johnson as their goalie (and Erskine on the blue line, for that matter). I still think they can make the playoffs this year, but it requires a higher level of play than they have displayed the last two weeks.

I doubt they make a move.
They are looking to the future.

I was wrong. Looks like the Caps are picking up Goaltender Cristobal Huet for a second round pick.

I like both of these moves. I know Federov's skills have declined over the years, but I think he can be effective on the PP. Besides, who is Theo Ruth? Trading the 2nd round pick that they got for Sutherby is not a bad move either. That is the exact reason they have been stockpiling picks over the last few years. I would still like to see them get some help for the blue line.

They traded Matt Pettinger (who hadn't done much this year) to the Canucks for Matt Cooke. Apparently he is a checking line forward. Not sure how this helps.

I think the Caps have made some good moves for the playoffs. I really see Federov as a guy that will come in and help these young guys alot. I'm a Caps fan cause I live in NOVA, but I am a bred Sabres fan and am really disappointed with the moves they made. Looks like i'll be rotting for the Caps come playoff time.

I think they needed Fedorov as a replacement for Nylander and as a mentor or guide for the young guys (esp. Ovechkin and Semin) in the playoffs.

Good call on the Huet move! I'm so surprised they made all these moves.

Federov...WAY past his prime, but probably a locker room leader and just another Russian to keep nurturing Ovie and Semin along. I also agree that he'll be a good power play addition. Even if he doesn't score a lot of goals, he'll certainly draw attention, which will leave more space for others (namely #8)
Huet...if he comes in and does well, Kolzig is done! Brent has been a solid backup and Kolzig will never be able to do that. Solid move!
Cooke...I only remember his name from when he played with Markus Nasland and I think the two were a GREAT pair.

I'll take it. I'll be there on Saturday, can't wait to see the new guys in action!

Federov is a good locker-room addition, will help season the young guys and his Russian buddies.

Matt Cooke is an agitator who may add some attitude. If memory serves me, he was the guy who fought Steve Moore (cleanly) in the first period of that fateful game when Bertuzzi committed his sickening cowardly assault.

I believe that Huet and Kolzig are both UFA after this season. It should be interesting to see who plays better in the playoffs and what happens after the Caps win the Cup.;)

And I'll drink to the new guys on the ice. 2 out of the 3 will be playing tonight.

I am gonna have to bank these drinks and save them for the game tonight.
