I believe it was on Friday night in SouthernWalk.
Windshield smashed, purse stolen, credit cards used during the night.

Why would anyone leave their purse in the car overnight? I don't take mine into the house to necessarily prevent theft...I take it inside because there's stuff in it I need and I might need to put other stuff in it for the next day.

I also believe a GPS (Tom-Tom) was also removed from a SUV near Truro Parish. The SUV was left unlocked.

Although nothing can excuse what these criminals did, I think it would be a good idea to remove temptation from the criminals by not leaving high-value easily transportable stuff out in the open in your car.

Got one of those really cool portable GPSs? Utilize its portability by stashing it in a storage box or putting it under something like a sweater (unplugging the cord of course!).

Leaving a purse in the car is seldom a good idea IMHO.

It is a shame we have such criminals around this area, but we also should take some responsibility in not placing temptation in sight of the criminals.

As for the person who left their SUV unlocked... well not a lot of sympathy from me I am afraid. I don't understand how anyone can leave their car unlocked when away from it. That is just begging for trouble.

I think we all make mistakes once in a while and leave things in our car when we didn't really mean to.

A lot of people don't think. I was in Giant over the weekend and I passed a grocery cart down an aisle, no one was around, but there was a purse wide open in the cart. I looked around for the woman, but didn't see anyone.....I just can't believe the number of woman who put their purses in the cart even while they're shopping and with their cart. I'm very protective of my purse and it's right on my body all the time when I'm out.

I believe there was some news stories, a little while ago, about women having their wallets lifted while grocery shopping.

People have to realize that the world is not a safe place and that not everyone is a nice person.

Yes - it was in the Broadlands Safeway where that happened.

Just to clarify...I was SO NOT blaming the victim. I am sorry it happened and the purse owner has my utmost sympathy.

Although I realize that having your car broken into is no laughing matter, these stories always remind me of an old Saturday Night Live skit that might actually be a good idea:

The Chameleon XLE - a luxury car on the inside, a dilapidated wreck on the outside, with such features as simulated transmission fluid leak, mismatched hubcaps (one painted school-bus yellow), coat hanger antenna and a supple, leather and wood interior, to deter the high risk of theft that accompanies luxury cars.

I used to lock my convertible until someone cut my roof (while it was parked in the "secure" parking lot of my building) to go through my car. I now do not make it a habit to lock my doors.

Let's face it - locked or unlocked - if someone wants to get in bad enough, they'll get in no matter what.....

exactly, the key is not to make your car more attractive for criminals than the next car. With sufficiant loot being visible, there is not much anyone can do to prevent a criminal from getting into your car.

I want President Obama's new limo. 8 inch thick doors with 5 inch thick windows. That's the car you need to be secure in!

And it is a Hybrid so it probably gets 2 miles to the gallon :)

This is my point. Oz, you said no sympathy for those who don't lock their car doors. Am I better off locking my doors and getting my roof slashed and having my car gone through or am I better off not locking my doors?

How would you get in, or would you always keep a supply of rubber gloves with you? ;)

Would it be illegal to prewire a sawed off shotty in the inner driver's or passenger seat so that if there was an illegal break-in, it would go off right in the perpetrators face? Just a thought
