Anyone else's car broken into last night? I know it happened to us and about 10 others in SW.

We were lucky that nothing was taken, but probably a good reminder to take your valuables inside.

    Anyone have any information?

I heard there were cars broken into in Ashburn Village also. Please remember and remind your friends and family to always lock car doors, remove electronics (GPS, phone, music player) from view, and don't leave purses or bags in plain sight. I parked next to a car once that had all of those. Sometimes it's just opportunity that causes teenagers to ransack cars and steal stuff. Sometimes it's regular old criminals. Lock those car doors and hide all your toys!

Were they actually "broken into" or were they left unlocked?

Ours was broken into but nothing was taken. There was nothing valuable in the car. Wife reports no damage to the door, so they probably used a slim-jim.

I've been thinking about getting a camera system, might be a good time to revisit that. Does anyone have any recommendations? Or would a motion-activated flood light be a better option?

If you have the money Axis P3367 5Megapixel - I just helped my neighbor install one a few months back. It is a little better at night than my P3346. Does not require a DVR - can record to the camera's SD card. Or use Milestone Xprotect go - the free version now has mobile access and a very nice app. He ended up using Avigilon to record and for the mobile access - which is very cool but pretty expensive.

There have been actual breakins in the surrounding areas over the last few months.

Sorry to hear about the break-ins!

A few years ago, we took advantage of a free service offered by the sheriff's office. An officer came out to our home, discussed security, lighting, our locks, etc. If this service is still offered, I highly recommend it.

Most law enforcement professionals will tell you that a camera system will not reduce your risk in the slightest. Along the same lines that locks only keep honest people from walking into your house.

What does reduce risk is highly visible cameras (working or not). That will cause the home invader to choose the house next door. Always the path of least resistance.

If they are aware the cameras are there, they are a deterrent to premeditated and property crime.

This is one of the things that could be a LOT better since camera systems with analytics can be used proactively to know if a person is on your property (as opposed to the neighbor's cat). Unfortunately the majority of the systems out there are pretty basic and cannot send useful notifications.

If you've ever seen person of interest on TV you have an idea of how this works with the tracking boxes.

We use our system to know when a package has been delivered. I also use it to know when the maid has arrived - before she has called now I can disarm the alarm system remotely and open the garage door.

I think this is one area we will see improve in the next five to ten years.

Here is the Loudoun Sheriff's Department Press Release on the various Auto Thefts in Ashburn:

Multiple Suspects Apprehended in Connection with Larcenies from Vehicles, Stolen Firearm Recovered sheriff.
    www.loudoun.gov/lcsonews

Loudoun County, VA- A stolen firearm was recovered last Thursday during a search warrant at a home in the 43200 block of Rush Run Terrace in Ashburn. The search warrant stemmed from three arrests made two days earlier after a resident reported suspicious activity in their Ashburn neighborhood.

On February 5th, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of Marsh Creek Drive and Riverstone Court around 1:30AM after receiving a call from a resident who reported seeing several subjects attempting to enter vehicles in the area. Three suspects were located and taken into custody.

“This case is a great example of community involvement and good old fashioned police work,” said Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman. “It is important for residents to be engaged, they are the eyes and ears in the community and can be instrumental in helping us solve crimes,” Chapman added.

The three suspects arrested February 5th were Tommy V. Tran, 18, of Ashburn, VA, Stephen M. McCullough, 19, of North Carolina, and Christian A. Mullins, 20, of Winchester, VA. Tran was charged with grand larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny with intent to sell. McCullough and Mullins were charged with conspiracy to commit larceny with intent to sell-distribute. Tran remains held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. Mullins and McCullough were released on a $5000 secured bond.

The investigation into the February 5th thefts led to information about the location of a firearm reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the area of Cameron Hunt Place on January 7th. Deputies executed a search warrant at a home Rush Run Terrace home in Ashburn on February 7th. Jesse M. Williams, 18, a resident of the home, was charged with receiving a stolen firearm and remove/alter of a serial number on a firearm. He was released on a $7,500 bond.

Three additional suspects involved in the larcenies were identified during the investigation and taken into custody this week. Lucas Q. Battles, 18, of Ashburn, and Adrienne H. Sherman, 19, were both charged with larceny with intent to sell/distribute on February 13th. Battles remains held without bond. Sherman was released on a $2,500 secured bond. The third suspect, Hilary A. Garthwaite, 20, of Winchester, was located by authorities in West Virginia on February 14th. She is charged with larceny with intent to sell/distribute and is being held at the Eastern Regional Jail on a $35,000 bond.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to report suspicious activity to 703-777-1021 or to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.
