Yep, a family is a governing body. Look it up in your 'oh so precious' English dictionary.

Am I not entitled to the same privileges as you when it comes to interpretation of the English language?

Show me a dictionary that defines a teacher as a government bureaucrat.

Nowhere in your definition does it mention a 'teacher' or educator. You 'interpreted' the definition to make it fit your subject. I'm interpreting it the same way, per what you posted.

A family fits the definitions you stated above, thus, it's a form of government. As such, yes, per your own definitions and their interpretation, YOU are a government bureaucrat.

Please man up and admit that you couldn't find a dictionary to support your outrageous assumption.

My family is like the government.

I propose and pass bills and my wife vetoes them.

Money dissappears out of my wallet (taxes?).

I get stains on...... oh wait! Scratch that one! ;)

First of all, thank you for a rationale post that does not ridicule home-schoolers. For example, I was happy to see a post where I was not accused of robbing my kids of something. It happened: see here.

I was an orphan as a child, so I have been educated in government schools, private schools, and in a home-school setting, depending on where I was at the time. The best learning environment was the home-schooling, followed by private schools. So, my views are informed by personal experience.

Who runs government schools? Answer: the government

Who sets the curriculum? Answer: the government

The government runs the schools and decides what is taught and what is not taught. That determines what kids learn and do not learn. That's indoctrination.

Ah, but can you and your kids muster a 2/3 majority to over-rule the veto? ;)

"Yes, sir." in Austrian or German. Might I ask what you're trying to insinuate here?

What did those government schools teach you? "Austrian" is not a language. German is spoken in the Republic of Austria, not Austrian. (In der Republik Österreich, man spricht Deutsch, nicht Österreichisch.)

    Insinuation? See interjection at http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Jawohl

YW. I don't know enough about it to ridicule it yet.

Well OK, but that still seems pretty circular to me.
So, when they're home taught, it's still indoctrination, right? Just, not by the government?

Trying to understand where you're coming from on this. "Indoctrination" is such a loaded word that we have to exercise care in using it. People are bound to be upset by it because of the steeply negative connotation it carries.

    Thanks!

EXCUSE ME? Oh! I see! You are insinuating that I went to a 'government school' because I wrote Austrian/German and forgot that German was spoken in Austria!

Well, here's some news for you! I DID NOT GO TO A GOVERNMENT SCHOOL! I was born and raised in Canada. I went to a private school.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to all the citizens of the Republic of Austria for saying 'Austrian' in regards to a language.

Finally, Gryphon, I know what you're trying to 'insinuate' what your post, as well as your private message to me. Don't go there, or I promise you will be banned from these forums for ANY personal attack, either on myself, another moderator, or another user. You have been warned. END OF DISCUSSION.

Posts are not marked as 'edited' if they are edited and saved again within a few seconds of being posted.

Since I have a tendency to monitor what you post, I caught it before you had a chance to edit it, which is why my reply had your original text.

The fact that you put the word logic in quotes, in my opinion, completely discredits any argument you try and make.

Based on your logic then, you are saying that:

    1. Government encourages and accepts violence, drugs, sex and gangs.

    2. That the curricula would differ depending on who was in office.
