Not sure if I'm using the right terminology but...

I am getting close to purchasing our first HD set and wondering if you can pick up local HDs via a QAM tuner using Comcasts analog service? I'd rather not deal with upgrading to any other Comcast service while waiting for FIOS.

    thanks

no - you must use an antenna or get HD service from them.

    Edit:

flynnibus, is this from first hand experience? a quick (not exhaustive) reading of some posts on avsforums (HDTV, Washington DC), showed some people using this.

I have not tried with my set.. but I find it EXTREMELY unlikely. more likely is they are getting some channels on the digital signal that simply are unencrypted

Yep and it works. Got the set tonight, plugged in the cable to the ANT input, did an autoscan for digital stations and viola. All locals in HD plus some unencrypted PPV movies in HD as well now available. I recall reading somewhere that the cable companies must provide any OTA station in their basic service, even if its HD. The other channels are just the cable company using unassigned channels to provide other services like PPV.

No ESPN or Discovery HD but good enough until FIOS comes around (hopefully soon).
