I just got a phone call from Comcast trying to sell me television service to go with my internet service. He said that our internet is now Comcast but didn't really have anymore info, was trying to sell me on switching from Dish Network.
Does anyone have any info on Adelphia's internet service, basically how long before we have to get a new email address?

I got a call from Comcast saying that Adelphia is now Comcast and asked if I wanted to take advantage of their "Dish Buyback" program. It was too good to pass up: $29.95 per month plus full Digital lineup thrown in. I went ahead and signed up and they are installing this weekend.
Funny thing though: when I called Comcast back to make a change to my install, the customer service rep. said that Comcast does not serve my zip code and that the Adelphia switch won't take place for another month or so. He suggested I call Adelphia. Call Adelphia and customer service rep says they have no record of any installation scheduled for me.
So, a bit of a mystery. I guess I'll find out on Saturday. There's no charge for install and no commitment. I'll update this weekend.

Well, believe it or not, Adelphia showed up on time with all the right equipment!! The guy was in and out within 15 minutes. He said that we would be Adelphia for a couple more months and then become Comcast. I have to say so far, I am very pleased. I have 2 Hi-Def DVR's and another digital box and they all work flawlessly. I never thought that I would leave DirecTV, but I'm a cable fan now (or at least until Verizon FiosTV arrives).

Does anyone know if they are going to offer cable cards? I'd love to be able to get cards for a Series 3 box.

What kind of HD DVR did you get? A Motorola 6412?

I know that Adelphia offered CableCards (http://www.adelphia.com/cable_entertainment/CableCard.cfm), so hopefully Comcast will do the same. I seem to remember reading somewhere that cable companies *HAD* to offer CableCards if customers requested them (per an FCC regulation), but the charges for getting/using them, etc, was all over the place.

Also, it has been noted that some mis-informed Comcast support/sales personel were telling users that they could not be issued a CableCard for use in a DVR, which is FALSE. Folks who have been told this by Comcast employees simply went 'up the food chain' until a competent individual fullfilled their request.

How would you rate their user interface on this unit? Would it pass the 'wife' test? We currently use Tivos, so that would be our baseline to compare to...

    Thanks!

Just found a page on weaknees w/ some info: http://www.weaknees.com/cablecard.php?code=148010. So I may have to look into transfering a lifetime over to a series 3 box while TiVo still offers it.

Tech Head: I was hoping that Comcast was issuing something better than the Motorola DCT 64xx series. I currently have a 6412 and it is buggy. I'm on my fourth box. At least Adelphia has been very good about replacing them when they go bad.

Mr. Linux: The UI is OK, and can certainly be operated by anyone. However, it is nowhere near as good as a TiVo (I have two). TiVo can do a lot of things that the 64xx series just can't (search for programs by name, keywords, wish list, and so on).

The biggest problem with the 64xx boxes is they get "confused" easily. The symptoms are: random segments flashing on the front panel display, sluggishness in responding to the remote/front panel (I've seen delays of 1-8 minutes!), and just totally locking up and not responding. There doesn't seem to be any reason for these problems that I can avoid doing. The boxes run hot, and I have 5" of space around the back, sides, and top, so I know that it is not my setup.

According to a posting on AVS Forum, Comcast had decided to drop the Motorola 64xx series due to their troublesome nature. I'm hoping that is true, but judging by Tech Head getting a 6416, I can see that it is not happening yet.

As far as email goes....do we have to switch to a @comcast address or do we keep our @adelphia address? And if so, when?

My wife seems to have mastered the interface for the basic things. There's definitely some things I like about it - a few that I don't. But overall, I'm OK with it. It's funny though, I could not figure out how to record one channel while viewing another one and I went through 3 customer service reps who couldn't tell me. I finally figured it out myself while on the phone with a CSR and informed them on how to do it. The guy actually said, "Well, you learn something new everyday."!!

When the Adelphia tech installed the 6412 for me, one of the quick ref guides explained how to switch between the dual tuners. Unfortunately they don't go into enough detail on how to use the two tuners.

In the UI I'd like to see some more hints at which tuner is being used and when.

Well, I now see what everyone says about the Motorola 64xx DVR series being buggy. Wow, this thing is full of bugs. So, is anyone on here actually using the Tivo Series 3 with cablecard?

Anyone else get the November 10 letter from Comcast (Christine Whitacker, Area VP and GM) on the switch to Comcast High Speed? It appears from the paragraph titled "Lucky 7", that the email addresses are switching to @comcast.net, is this right?

The letter says an email will come on November 29 with more details. I called Comcast Customer Service and was told that switchover would not happen until summer of '07.

Anyone know how to get a hold of Christine Whitacker at Comcast's Northern Virignia office to express an opinion?

Sounds like it may be time to just switch once to a gmail or yahoo account.

What happens is.. the box is pretty straight forward until.. two shows are recording at the same time.. or you have manually started recording on a channel.

In those cases switching to a DVR show is easy.. but switching to another live channel (or the other current recording) will warn you that doing so will stop your current recording. In these cases you must use the 'swap' button to toggle between the tuners.

The other oddity is that only one of the tuners supports Dolby digital at a time. So you can get into situations where you think you should be getting digital out, but you aren't. The easy way to tell is if you are looking at the 'info' for the program on the onscreen guide, and you do not see the DD5.1 and you think you should be. In these cases, if you swap, it should come back. I find it easier (if no recordings are happening) to just power cycle the box. Then it will come back with the DD5.1 being active.

Sometimes the box gets sluggish responding to commands and will pause while it queues up all commands.

Those are the only issues I have with it.. oh and the horrible analog decoder. The picture quality on analog channels is much worse through the STB then if you put it into the TV directly.

I don't have it in front of me.. but it sounds like all accounts are migrating to @comcast

Because they are changing the # of email accounts and were moving them.
