Our local Cub Scout Packs 1483 and 1484 finished up our popcorn selling season, and all the Scouts got their rewards (trophies, gift cards, soon to be here patches) from both the local Packs and from the popcorn organizers (Trail's End).

We got asked a lot where the money goes, seeing the prices are set so high (which we don't set). Part of it goes back to the manufacturer, some goes to the National scout organization, and the remainder goes to the Packs. We use the money for things like campouts, outings and other events as well as materials. In Pack 1483 (and I think 1484 as well) the Scouts get half this money as well into their personal Scout account which is mainly used for the big camping trips of the summer - Camp Snyder and Camp Goshen.

Our two Broadlands Packs combined our income this year and purchased a brand new metal Pinewood Derby track to replace a wooden track that was falling apart. If over the last month you heard the sounds of saws and drills late into the night coming from the neighbors garage it was most likely Dads rushing to get cars made. :)

Anyway, from all of us to everyone who took out a second mortgage to buy a few boxes of popcorn (which got placed on the shelf next to the boxes you bought last year!) we really do thank you for supporting Scouting!

Thanks for the info, John. One question, if you don't mind.

We often opt to just give the troop some money for their activities, instead of buying popcorn (some dietary restrictions in our house). We heard rumor that troops must use any such donations to purchase popcorn and donate the popcorn somewhere.

Is this true? Or do donations to the troop go 100% to the troop's activities?

Should we opt to make a donation later in the year instead?

(Okay, I see now it's actually three questions)

Yes, that is true. We're not allowed to take in monetary donations directly to the Pack. So all donations are pooled and we buy whatever popcorn inventory we have remaining and donate that to the military. The Pack (and Scouts) receive the same % of money regardless if you purchase a pack of popcorn or donate.

Now what we do need if anyone reading this wishes to donate to the Pack is a portable projector and screen! Things like that can be donated directly to us (well, 'officially' to our sponsor church but they just give it to us). We're without a projector and screen for our Pack meetings (our last one has moved on to Boy Scouts) and still looking for one. If anyone has a used one they aren't using or wishes to donate a new one please PM me! It's tax deductible. :)

    Thanks!
