Could anyone recommend a good contractor to build a deck? Any experience you may have had, and a good idea of cost would be appreciated.

Alot depends on what you're looking for.
Just a deck or something that looks good as well ??

Do you want something that you can intergrate with your existing landscaping, or are you starting to plan your landscaping and want to put the deck in first??

My advice, based on what we did in integrating the landscaping and the deck/screenporch addition, is to get a good landscape architect to do an overall plan for your property. This way you can phase in what you want to do without it being haphazard changes.

I am also interested in building a deck in my new townhome. I wonder what the homeowner's association regulations and state laws are. Does anyone know where can I look that up? Thanks!

The homeowner rules should have been given to you by the builder's agent at contract signing. This way you have a chance to review the covenants, and back out within 3 days. In addition, each townhome section has different rules that apply as far as size of deck, and overall designs. So what you see in one area, may not apply to yours.

If not, you should go back to your builder and request the package you should have gotten.

As far as the county requirements, you'll need a building permit, know the setback issues for the design, and structural inspections that the builder should be requesting.

Mike at Virginia Deck & Patio is great- dependable, fast, and the workmanship is awesome. His prices were the best we found. I don't know his number...but maybe you could google him.
    Good Luck!
