I just tried to have Direct TV installed on my townhouse. The installer from direct tv said that because the dish was 45lbs I would need to have a 4'X4' section of the roof reinforced in order to secure the dish so there are no problems with the reception.

Does anyone know who can take care of this and how much it might cost. I really don't like Adelphia and would like to watch some NFL Sunday Ticket this football season.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Are you kidding me? I have never heard of or had my roof "reinforced" to support the DirecTV dish. I'd try a different installer.

There are dishes all over Ashburn and I'm sure none of them had mojor work done. Some guy went up the ladder and bolted it to the roof. :)

Sounds like you are in a middle townhome and maybe have no 'side' to your roof-line? Then they don't have an easy spot to attach to

Mine is on my roof and I'm in the center townhome. The installer tried to charge me extra money to have it installed up there because it was 3 floors. Nice try...

Regardless of lack of mounting options, 45lbs?

DirecTV's new 5-LNB HD dish capable of receiving local HD broadcasts weighs about 50 pounds. It is an oval dish about 2 feet across and 1 1/2 feet high (much larger than the standard DirecTV/Dish dish). It's huge.

Because we were having it mounted to our roof, and not to a pole or other more solid service, we had to sign a waiver saying the installer was not liable if the wind ever knocked it over.

I guess I've been out of the satellite TV game too long. I have a 3lnb dish out in the garage that weighs about 12lbs. These new ones must have multiswitches built into them or something.

I decided to try a different installation company to see if I have better luck with them. This time I went thru Circuit City and brought the equipment home. This dish does not weigh 45lbs. If anything it's close to 30lbs. If they give me the same problems I'll either have to cave and find a roofer to do the work or just settle for crappy Adelphia (Who can't change to Comcast soon enough) At this point I'll just have to wait and see.

You shouldn't need a roofer to reinforce a section of roof. Just cut some 2x4's to the width of your rafter spacing and nail them in from the sides of the rafters in your attic.
