Does anybody have the Directv HD DVR ? If so, do you know if it is a requirement for the receiver to be connected to a phone line in order for the product to be fully functional ? If not connected to a phone line, what services are not available ?

I have my DTV HD DVR working without a hook up to a phone line. It isn't required. I didn't do anything special, just didn't hook up the phone.

The only function you miss is the ability to order through the device PPV movies. You can still order them via the web.

We have one. They have done a number of software updates since we got it in Jan/Feb. And it now runs without a hitch (knock on wood).

The nice thing about having the phone line connected is the on-screen caller ID. Other than that, I read that the phone line needs to be connected for some of the subscrption sports channels so that they can get the blackouts programmed.

Perhaps, but this DVR is better than any other providers DVR. Comcast's DVR is a joke. You can still go out and pick up a Tivo Series 3 which supports MPEG-4, but it only works on cable. I have DirecTivo's on all my SD TV's and it's pretty much bullet proof, but the DirecTivo HD version doesn't support MPEG-4, and DTV no longer sells it. The nice think about the DirecTV DVR (HR20) is that DTV is constantly upgrading the software... they seem committed to working out bugs and introducing new features.

Liberty Media recently bought DTV from Murdoch. This may be good news for Tivo. The reason DTV moved away from Tivo to begin with is that Murdoch wanted to use one of his electronics companies to develop and build an exclusive DTV box. Now that Murdoch doesn't own DTV anymore, it opens the door for Tivo to come back in. Although it's possible, we'll see if that happens any time soon.

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't it need the phone line to receive the updates for the program guide? I thought that each night it dialed itself up and downloaded the newest program information.

I rebooted the HR20 the other day (something you never had to do with the tivo :( ) and they seem to finally have implemented predictive ff/rw in which it jumps back based on your reaction time. early on they said they wouldn't do this because of the tivo patents, but glad they finally did =)
