I'm driving to Richmond tomorrow (Friday). I need to be there no later than 9:30 am.

My plan is to leave at 6:30 & take the toll road to the beltway, then 95S.

Is there a better way to avoid the traffic or do I just need to deal with it on the beltway and leave at 6:30?

I've usually take 28 South to 234, which dumps you onto 95 South at around Dumfires and avoids the beltway completely. You're still likely to have slow traffic on 95 at times, but no 495 and no mixing bowl mess.

I can't stand driving on the beltway or on 95 between Springfield and Woodbridge. I like taking the Fairfax County Parkway to Ox Rd. then getting onto 95 at Oquaquan.

28 south to 66 East to Fairfax County Parkway South to Rte 123 South Ox Rd. to 95 south at Oquaquan. Plan on that taking 30 to 45 mins to rach 95 South at that hour.

This is what I've done many times in the past and suggest as well...

I agree with the others in the alternative routes to Richmond.
I typically use Rt28, to 66 west and exit onto 234 (PW Parkway) and take that down to 95S (this will put you close to Dale City Quantico just shy north of Aquia/Stafford).

I've departed our home as late as 6:20AM and have arrived to the 4th Circuit Court (off Bank St) by 8:45. But word of warning if you take Prince William County Pkwy Busines 234 (to 95-South) - you will want to put on the cruise control, do not drive 1mile over the posted speed limit. No kidding Feb of 2012 I was written a speeding ticket for going 2 miles over the posted 55mph. The PWC presence is notorious on this particular major thoroughfare.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I'm definately going to try 28 to 234!

    17 to 95 is a different option

I also recommend 234 to 95S. There are some backroads you can take to get to 234 & 66 if getting to 28 is bad.

Over the last 6 months while my mother was battling cancer, I drove to Richmond almost weekly. Used the route JLC and JJB describe. Unless you need to head south in the afternoon, this is the best route.

I have done the 15 to 17 to 95 one that softballchick mentioned. It is longer, but usually no traffic and no stress until you hit 95 (very far south at that point though). And, it is a pretty drive.
