While many banks will exchange currency back to US money - unsure of ones that will sell you foreign currency.

If you're going overseas you can use your debit card over there to withdraw. Just be sure to let them know you are going ahead of time.

We got very good rates from our credit union. Credit cards will charge you a lot though...

Credit card norm is 3% transaction fee on top of the bank's exchange rate.

You can generally used your ATM card for cash withdrawals w/o much pain at your bank's exchange rate.

US Based Credit cards work most places but not necessarily all. It's not uncommon to find local places that won't accept US cards (but do accept domestic cards).

When I travel - I always just take the cash out of the ATM at the other side...

Banks can give any currency if you request it in advance. I've received Australian dollars from the Bank Of America next to Harris Teeter. You just need to call them a few days before you need it. The transfer rate was a bit better via a local bank than you'll get at the airport.

yea the airport is the worse place to get foreign currency (as far as exchange rates) but is convenient for small amounts. Yea talk to your bank and see if they can get currency for you ahead of time. And also check with them about the country or countries you are traveling too... ask them about exchange rates with ATM. Usually, that is your best bet, to use the ATM.

But check on the fees first... it can be different depending upon the country. But Euros are easily exchanged by banks here if you want to carry the cash with you.

When overseas and using ATM's, be VERY careful before swiping your card. Take a good look at the slot and make sure it doesn't look like it has anything 'attached' to it, or that it looks 'weird' for some reason. There has been a very rapid rise in 'skimmers' being attached to ATM machines which will record your card information as you swipe it and either record or send your information wirelessly to someone hanging around nearby. They also have very conspicuously disguised tiny cameras that will record what keys you press when entering your PIN. Regardless of what ATM you use, either locally or overseas, always make it a habit to 'cover' your hand as you punch in your PIN. And if something doesn't look right with the ATM, trust your instincts and find another one.

If you need cash, your best bet is to use a bank - and they offer better exchange rates.
