So YES, I check expirations dates, but The Man was in a hurry tonight and did NOT. Before i reveal just HOW expired this Apple Cider from Safeway, prominently on display at the end of an isle- is, how expired do YOU feel is acceptable on a perishable good like cider...?

It will begin to ferment after it is two weeks old. So really it shouldn't be sold at all after the expiration date.

Take it back and be sure the manager knows how ancient it is.

    That is just terrible.

Recently I purchased something from Safeway and it was also "past its prime". Not something I would expect from Safeway.

Well in addition to reading labels, I am also reading exp dates from now on

NOW I am even more confused- we went back to return it and these 100% natural, no preservative ciders are supposedly good until 2010?!? does that sound off to anyone else? how can fresh cider with nothing but apples and water be good for 2 years?

    http://www.ag.iastate.edu/aginfo/news/2001releases/cider.html

from the Iowa State College of Agriculture...

"When buying apple cider, pay attention to shelf life. The standard refrigeration period for unpasteurized cider is two weeks, or one week after it's opened. For pasteurized cider, it's four weeks or more. Preservatives will add approximately one week to shelf life."

Don't get me started on Safeway. Almost bought expired deli meat the other day but noticed the date before I left. Bought bread that, as soon as I got it home, noticed that the bag had been nibbled open and the bread had nibbles in it. Returned the bread for another loaf (will a sell by date of 11/2-tomorrow). Opened the bread and the bottom was moldy. I give up. Not worth it to go back and make another exchange, I'll just no longer shop there...

Just a note: Don't confuse expiration dates with "sell by" dates. Usually the sell by dates take into consideration one week of being in your fridge before it goes "bad."

But, Ummm.... a MONTH old? Do you have any champaigne yeast in the house? That, a bubbler & four weeks in the basement will get you some nice hard cider!

Our family has given up on Safeway except for quick things that have a long shelf life, like maybe canned or frozen goods that we need at the last minute. This 'expiration' problem has been going on for YEARS; all the managers have gotten an earful from residents, as well as the corporate office. Nothing has changed, so we don't go there anymore. We're a Harris Teeter / Giant / Wegmans family.

What really irks me is that the Safeway will eventually have to close its doors because of lack of business, and other stores in that center will suffer because of their shoddy business practices...

I've been in Safeway the last couple of weekends....lack of business...I don't think so...the place was packed and people had FULL baskets...this is before the opening they had on Nov. 1 too. For what's it's worth - I've bought rotten blueberries and other things at Wegmans and also a loaf of bread with mold. I LOVE Wegmans, I'm originally from WNY, trust me, it's NOT a novelty up there like it is here, it just a grocery store for the folks up there. What I'm trying to say - maybe Safeway is worse than the other grocery stores around here, but ALL of them have expired dates or rotten fruit or something. Actually - I've had it happen more than a few times at Wegmans.

We've always noticed Safeway to be much busier than Teeter and Giant (by Home Depot). I'd bet their future is more secure than the others....

OR it could a small child who grabbed the loaf of bread and decided to nibble....I've seen it.....
