I've always wanted to try this place. Thanks.

I jumped back into this post when I saw you responded, thought you might want to write up an expose on Safeway's expired food sales. This is definitely not the first time people have complained about very expired foods being sold here. ;-)

I second the suggestion of trying The Italian Store. It's off 66 at 29. They make sandwiches, too.

No, it's futher down. However, Little Italy is right around the corner from you. They are our favorite "local" sub joint when we can't trek to The Italian Store.

their practices are pretty weak, maybe that would be a wake up call. to be CLEAR- i DID find out the cider i bought was supposed to be good til 2010, however i am suspect of that b/c even the Ziegler website (the company that makes the cider in question) says it's got a short shelf life. the ingredients are APPLES. i find it hard to believe a product can stay fresh for over 2 years when it's nothing but APPLES. no preservatives, nothing but APPLES.

As for the Safeway in Broadlands, we stopped going there because for one, we have never been so concious of checking expiration dates because most of their items are always close to the expiration date and two, the workers there are a little off their rocker. It sure would've been nice if instead of building that book area they would have put in self checkout lanes.

Um - you might want to be a little kinder with your comment "workers are a little off their rocker". A couple of the employees are mentally challenged...I think it's great that a store hire them.

like the Helping Hands folks at Wegmans. I agree- it is great that they employ them to help with groceries. now if you are referring to the eccentric guy in the dairy section- THEN it's ok. lol

However, while it is laudable that these stores hire "special needs" people, the store still has the responsibly to ensure that the employees (special or not) actually do their job.

A store selling expired food is no less guilty of negligence because of who they hire.

I agree - those employees really don't have anything to do with the food, they help bag or collect the grocery carts, etc.

I really think more people need to approach the management.....I know it's been done before, but the sqeaky wheel gets greased. I paid 1.90 for gas yesterday....because of all the $$ I spend there.....that makes me happy. No - I didn't buy anything expired.

gas is 1.90 a gallon out here in Manassas (near where I work)- didn't have to buy $100 in groceries to get it! ;)

when we first moved here we were religious, weekly safeway shoppers. since they went downhill and wegmans opened, they get 90% of my biz.

Funny- I just got a Harris Poll survey that dealt with which gorcery store we used, used to use, and why we switched. hmmm!
