If you paid $1.90 for gas at the Broadlands Safeway then you should post it on the Virginia Gas Prices website - the lowest it shows is $2.13 at Costco. $1.90 is awesome!

This is only because I spend $$ at Safeway - you won't get it just by pulling in and getting gas. In other words, I got a 60 cent discount on the gas because I've been accruing by buying groceries.

I heard an ad for I believe WJLA Channel 7 about grocery stores selling expired products. I believe it's supposed to run tomorrow night at 5. Will keep listening to the radio to get more accuarte info, but if someone else caught this, please post!

CNN had a report the other day naming the five healthiest supermarkets and Safeway came in second (Whole Foods was first--I guess they haven't seen the report about the chinese pesticides in their foods). Anyhow, thought it was interesting considering people's experiences at our Broadlands Safeway.

i have NEVER had bad experiences at Safeways until THIS one, and only in the past few years. when we lived in Springfield we shopped at Safeway, as a kid in Nebraska that was our main supermarket- this is the first blemish on their chain in my personal experience.

management REALLY doesn't seem to care- I don't mean anyone in particular locally- they have always taken back the bad products and either refunded or exchanged what i requested. but corporate blew off several emails i sent letting them know this store is sliding downhill.

Again - I think you need to keep moving up the food chaing (no pun intended) to get management at this store to pay attention!!! E-mails are great, but I really think you need to make phone calls....which I will start doing.

I am pretty sure the blurb I heard said in the 5pm hour. I've got the noon news on now and will listen for it.

We did call and send e-mails. The response to our phone call was thanks for letting us know. There was no interest whatsoever.

The key is to keep moving up the chain....until you talk to someone who does care. I know it takes time and we're all pressed for time...but trust me...it works

The news story is coming up soon on WJLA. They said "several stores in our area". This should be interesting.

I'm curious why you choose to take the time to do all of this. If that was the only store within miles I'd support you completely and thank you for your effort! But we have many other choices and I personally wouldn't choose to spend my precious time like you have, so I'm curious why you do do all that?

I just took my business elsewhere and made my point with my wallet.

While "voting" with your wallet is a good idea, it loses its impact if the store does not know that

    1. You are no longer shopping there
    2. The reason you are not shopping there

In order to motivate the store to change, we have to let them know the WHY as well as the what.

WJLA - visited 8 stores in the area, 6 of them had expired food and medicines. They showed a Safeway product that had expired in 2007. Didn't say which location though. They said there was more info on the website but I haven't found it yet. Kris VanCleave (sp??) on the "I-Team" did the story.

I would figure that as they watch their business drop off they'll see that many of us are voting with our wallet, and if they don't care enough to notice, that's another one of their problems!

I should also admit that while I'd hate to see them fail (unless of course their failure means a Trader Joes or Whole Foods would move in) I don't really care enough -- especially after hearing how many other folks HAVE/DO -- to give them my reasons. I have other places to shop that suit my needs so I don't really need Safeway.

Now, if it was a Whole Foods going downhill in my neighborhood, I'd absolutely be in their face and ask them to clean up their act because there is value in that to me. Safeway doesn't add value to my life since I have so many other similar options.

That's why I asked tyger what made him/her spend so much effort on the topic. I know he/she cooks a lot too so obviously Safeway has value in his/her eyes. I'm curious what I'm missing!
