it would be worth MY time to talk to upper mangmnt b/c i DO like Safeway. but it would be OUR luck that another HT would move in if it fails, not a TJoes or Whole Foods. I wouldn't be able to to take that kind in your faceness with another Heetie Teetie- i would crack.

I agree... that would be a stupid business decision on the Teet's part. They're already pushing it as it is.

These things are true but a good store manager will notice expired food since that is part of their business. A good manager is on top of these things and makes sure that shoppers have a pleasant experience, find what they need, and what they buy is fresh.

I used to work in the retail industry and attended customer service training sessions and read books about good customer service. If the manager treats the store like he's the owner, he'll do good work.

Safeway does care - apparently they have a mystery shopper program based out of their Phoenix headquarters. I used to know someone who worked for them in this area evaluating all their stores. They took the input pretty seriously... if we could only get to them.....

good! after 2 years it's about time. i WANT it to be great. i'll still be shopping at wegmans- their cheese and deli are SUPERIOR to every other grocer in town in my eyes- but at least i won't be afraid to buy milk and yogurt around the corner.

mystery shoppers are nothing new and used by all the chains. Their job is to imitate normal customers tho.. not scour the shelves.

As many people buy without problems there... its obvious the problem isn't everything on the shelf... the chances of them finding something is relatively low. They are mainly used to test customer service.

Well that's the entire point here. The stores do NOT have good store managers noticing expired food.

The fact that there is expired food means that

    1. The store manager has not done their job
    2. If the customers don't inform the management it may not get noticed by the management.

If someone has that kind of time, they could take a grocery cart and go in search of expired food. Load up and take it to the customer service counter and show them all the expired items. Nothing beats seeing a problem in bulk!

Of course then they'll look at you like you're some kind of weirdo...

    ohhhh that's an idea. :)

Take about an hour to have a team scan one aisle in the store for expired or mouse nibbled packages.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I just had to post something here because of the level of frustration I have with the Broadlands Safeway.

I had to go out this evening to buy some milk, soup, and a couple other small things for the week. I'm in the dairy aisle and I'm looking at the cheeses and to my amazement, I find an assortment of packages that expired in January. I look over at the 'smoothies' right next to the yogurt and I'm disgusted to find they have stock on the shelves that EXPIRED IN DECEMBER! And these containers were NOT in the back. They had been put in the front and newer stock was put behind it, just like normal stock rotation.

So, after giving our Safeway another chance, I walked out disgusted. After all the calls our community has made, all the emails, all the chats with the store manager, this incredible situation persists. I give up; they can move stuff around and try to make the store more appealing, but until they can stock it with unexpired goods, they can kiss my business goodbye once again... That store simply doesn't care about its customers and our community.

    Incredible...

Gross, huh? I check for expiration dates on everything from boxed goods to dairy these days because of just such events. Did you mention it to an employee? Sometimes I do that.

On a slightly related note, one time I was at a store and saw a woman open a margarine container and dip her finger in to taste it. Then she put it back! I couldn't believe it and just stared at her. She didn't seem to care. And she did NOT take it to buy it. I guess that's why so many containers like that now have the sealed plastic over the top. I cannot believe what some people will do!

Maybe its time for a TV station investigation. They love this kind of stuff... send them over there about them intentionally selling expired food and I bet the stations eat it up.
