Our carpet is getting old and tired looking and in need of replacement. I've noticed a lot of people, as well as in new homes, are putting hardwood floors in the bedrooms.
Is this just a personal taste/current fad issue or will you recoup that money spent in resale?

I think that for people who like hardwood floors and people with allergies, having HW in the master bedroom is a positive. Some people simply don't like carpet. Of course, some people prefer carpet in the bedroom regardless of the flooring in the rest of the house, so you just never know.

I think it's a personal taste issue that isn't a big value like kitchen and bathroom remodels in resale. But I'll admit that I'm not an expert - I just watch a lot of HGTV. ;-)

    I Googled and found this:

I have a good friend who has hardwood floors in her bedroom, and although she admits she loves the way they look, she says the room gets very cold in the winter! When we redid our flooring, we put hardwood on the landing, but stuck with carpet in the bedrooms. Glad we did.

I think it is a matter of preference. We had our whole house redone last February. Looks great, easier to keep clean and has cut down with allergies. I was worried about the bedrooms being colder as well (they were cold to begin with) but they aren't any different now than the last 10 years.

We are getting ready to go with hardwood on the main level and stairs. I was wondering the same thing about doing the kitchen. Husband thinks it would be fine, I am a bit more skeptical - so much wear and tear.

As far as the stairs go, did you do a runner?

The only thing in our house that doesnt have HW is the upstairs...I like it, harder to keep clean (shows more dust, dog hair, etc) we do not have runners on the stairs, so we have to be more careful...very slick!! The floors were in when we bought the house...

Who are you using to put in hardwoods? We are looking at replacing carpeting in our Family room with hardwood, and upstairs hallway with hardwood while putting laminate in our basement. Thinking of going with Home Depot since they have a special on whole house installation. Anyone here not have carpet in their basement?

We have had hardwood kitchens in our last two houses and is the only material I would use. We have had linoleum and tile in other houses.
We have a carpet runner up the stairs.

Thanks for the feedback. 13 years ago, when we were looking at a model home here, we loved the look of the hardwoods on the first floor. On our return visit, the model was being sold and they were removing all the furnishings. As they took out the rug in the dining room, I couldn't believe how much the exposed wood had faded from the sun. Made me a little hesitant to make the switch from carpet.

Hberg - I searched some older posts about installers and have decided to get several estimates. Will probably check out Design Flooring, K&K and ProSource. We did a combination of carpet and laminate (in the bar area) in our basement

When we built our house here ~ 8 years ago, we did hardwood throughout the main level except for family room, on the stairs with a runner and the upstairs hallway. We are very happy with our choice and wouldn't change anything though some of the carpets do get dirty (though so would area rugs).

We'd had natural-colored oak floors in our previous home and did notice quite a bit of fading when we moved out and picked up the area rugs. But we would still have chosen the darker wood like we have in our current home.

    Good luck!
