Do we need to get HOA approval for a simple storm door for the front of our house? I looked at the HOA guidelines and it only seems to mention getting approval for an ornamental door.

Yes, I think you do. When we purchased our house this summer, there was a "violation" on record from the former owners not having the storm door approved. We did not have to pay a fine, but did have to submit the approval.

gb10 - yes you do - just fill out the application and send it in - if it's the normal doors like you see all over it just a formality.

Actually - I just looked at the modifications on the home page and it said for doors: "no application is required for replacement of existing doors or storm/screen doors that are similar in type, style and color. Is this outdated?

Maintenance of your home typically does not require approval.

If something breaks or needs to be replaced and the replacement is THE SAME OR EXTREMELY CLOSE to matching the "original", then approval is not needed.

As no homes (don't think it is/was a builder option) were built with storm doors, original approval would be needed.

On that note, please remember that storm doors should be "full-view", NOT 1/2 glass, 1/2 aluminum.

Here is the link to the Design Guidelines for Doors
    http://www.broadlandshoa.org/fileshare/files/49/Broadlands+HOA+Design+Guidelines/021_Doors.pdf

If you currently have a storm door which has an approved application on file and you wish to replace it with the same door no application is required.

If you are installing a new storm door an application is required. Please see "Design Guidelines - Specific Guidelines - Storm/Screen Doors". Give me a call at the Nature Center if you have any questions 703-729-9714

Just out of curiosity, is a screen door on the front door allowed?

You can install a storm door and then replace the glass with screens seasonally. A wooden screen door would not be allowed.

I would say submit it to the committee. I think it would depend on how the final installed product would look, so photos showing actual installations would be helpful.
