About a year ago, one of the homeowners associations planted trees on Highview trail place in the front and backyards. I am not sure if it was the Broadlands HOA or Southern Walk HOA. Regardless, I am trying to find out if there was a warranty on them and if so, who to take it up with. One of the five in my yard didnt make it. Thanks in advance for anyone who can shed information on this.

It was more than likely Van Metre that planted the trees and not either of the HOAs.
You should contact VM and ask them about replacing it if it within the year or slightly over. Found they do a pretty good job of taking care of this in the area I'm in.

beahmer is correct. Contact VM, not the HOA.

But be prepared to wait. We have been waiting for five months to replace a dead tree on our property planted by Van Meter. When we call they keep telling us we are on the list but they are taking their own sweet time . . .

jblnd - I am mildy surprised they have not replaced your tree yet. We had a tree that died and they replaced it within a couple weeks.

The tree that they replaced our dead tree with ALSO died pretty much around this time. VM said they would replace it but not until spring.

JJB - odds are you will have to wait until spring too.

Thnx everyone for the responses. Reported to Van Metre...they took it no questions asked and said it would be taken care of. I inquired now or in the spring and the answer was before fall is over. We will see. I cant complain because I didnt report it sooner.

Actually, I might be wrong, but wouldn't a newly transplanted tree have better chances of survival in the spring than mid-fall?

JJB, make sure you ask them if they will replace the tree next spring/summer if if doesn't make it through the winter...

    Another ??

Who is responsible to prune the street trees next to the sidewalks - cul-de-sacs and streets. Most of them look way to bushy and need to be thinned out.

By "Street Tree" do you mean the tre in your front yard that is near the sidewalk? If so then those trees belong to you as a homeowner and each individual resident would be responsible for the trees in their yards.

Well no, I took that out as it was a junk tree and filled in the hole. I'm on a corner of a cul de sac and have a tree on the side outside my fence near the sidewalk. Guess that's "Mine" wow more money to spend I don't have because we live here. Yahoo!

Wow, a few bucks to buy some pruning shears and the 10 miuntes to trim a few small branches. Yeah, I can see where that is a budget and time killer.

    Want some government cheese?

Um nope., you see, I bought trees that were already fairly tall for our yard, and though I can prune roses and crepe myrtles and my old house had a beautifully pruned Cherry tree, I am not about to get up on a ladder to do it now, when I have to get up into the belly of the tree so to speak.

You have to cut out branches that cross, all the feeders that are on the lower branches and in between the branches higher up, not to mention you should always take off the feeders that are below the main skirt of the tree. This is not easy work...Trees are not supposed to look like bushes at this age, they need to have openings in the branches so the air and sunlight can circulate better.

    Brassy@39 and others:

Concerning VM or homeowner tree questions--see my post on 7/26/06 on thread Please trim your trees..

The post was posted by me (aka Food Dr) I changed user name because my son suggested (same person). He thought I should would wait till I finished my PHD. Oh well!!

VDOT may be responsible for right-of-way trees, tree trimming, etc. 10-15 right-of-way they will prune if needed. Check with them. If you wish supervisor name or contact--I can provide info.

They worked with us in a former HOA neighborhood where we lived in getting trees pruned and maintained. The budget constraints may be prohibitive; but keep after them. Also, if it a site issue on VDOT's property line--notify them of problems with signs and landscape concerns.

    Good luck--

Foodie, what you are saying is only true if VDOT actually 'owns' the road that Brassy lives on. I don't know where that user resides, but if it's a private street, then VDOT will NOT trim these trees. We have LOTS of streets still considered 'private' in Broadlands, thus maintained by the Broadlands HOA.

Correct ... and if I remember right, the 'street' trees that were planted by VM were planted OUTSIDE of the VDOT right of way, thus VDOT will not do any trimming unless the trees become a hazard, then the homeowner will get a bill. FWIW .. any trees planted INSIDE the VDOT R-O-W are illegal by VDOT regs.

Since I started this thread, I will update it. My Dead Tree was replaced prior to October 28. I do not know the exact date because I was out of town for the week. My other half did not realize the tree was replaced and didnt know what day they actually did it. Kudos to Van Metre on this one. They replaced it within 2 weeks of being called.
