It doesn't look like it will track over us like Isabel did, but still too early to tell. Just listen to the local news as Saturday approaches and you'll know what to do.

Secure outdoor furniture and other items or move them indoors. Prepare for power outages. Keep 1 gallon of water per person per day on hand.

    In that order.

edit: Skip the eggs. If we lose power you can't cook them anyway. :)

Sure you can! Do what we did and make sure you have 2 full tanks of propane for your grill! If we lose power, we'll just grill all the time!!! I would actually look forward to that!

Not sure what the panic in Loudoun is for. People buying up ALL the D batteries and as much water and beer as they can carry. Geez, we're not even in the watch area, much less warning.

We never lost power during Isabel and the winds and rain with this are supposed to be a lot less.

we will likely get tropical storm winds and flooding rain. With a widespread storm like this, it can take longer to get power restored if it goes out due to the scale of the event.

Turn your freezer to the coldest setting before the storm so if you do loose power items will keep longer.

We'll see. Looking like 1-3" of rain (hardly flooding over 12 hours) and winds of 25-40 mph. Too many people have bought into the forecast for the coast which doesn't apply to us. Just west of us will probably get NOTHING. Let's come back Sunday and see who was right, okay? Once again, we have lived in Ashburn since 1995 and have only lost power for a couple of hours in a tropical storm that tracked west of us (worst case scenario). This is east and will not be that big of a deal.

As one who lived in Florida for a while and has been through more than enough hurricanes, it's always better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I heard yesterday on NPR that the fed gov't is teaming up with retailers to work on emergency preparedness because they have so much data. #1 foodstuff in advance and immediately following a hurricane per WalMart's massive database: Strawberry PopTarts!

When Isobel came through in 2003 we lived in Falls Church and were out of power for about 24 hours. Downed trees were the culprit there, which isn't as big of an issue in Ashburn, but still a possibility. Secure outdoor items and have fresh food (that doesn't require refrigeration or electricity to cook) on hand. Even if the power doesn't go out you'll eat that food anyway so it's no big deal to plan ahead and have it in the house. So while the hurricane per se may not be an issue for Loudoun, severe thunderstorms and strong winds might be.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I never said we don't prepare, but this storm was never supposed to impact Loudoun the way it was the to the east and it didn't. The bigger issue is the panic. I mean, really, who needs to buy every single D battery they can find? True preparedness means already having supplies in place and not doing panic shopping the day or two before. All I wanted to do Friday was my regular grocery shopping as I go every Friday. The stores were packed and people were buying crap they certainly didn't need and grabbing multiples of items and not leaving any for others. We always have extra food and water for several days in case of travel or power problems, mainly for the winter.

There were reports of grocery stores being out of milk. How much milk can people drink before it hits it's expiration date?
