Just wondering if anybody on these forums has purchased the iPhone and what your opinion is of it. Also, would be interested to hear if you switched to AT&T just for the iPhone and what your experience has been. Thanks!

I have also considered to switch to AT&T just for iPhone.

But after hearing mixed reviews about this product, I decided to post-pone the switch.

I am also interested to hear what others are going to say about the iPhone.....

3 bad things in the press:

    1) The "modem" technology is old, so using it to connect your PC to the webbernets renders speeds less than a 56K modem.

    2) Overheating & self destruction in as few as four days.

    3) The battery is soldered in just like the iPod. So, if you need a new battery, it will cost you $70 & 4 days for replace ment, plus $7 shipping plus $24 for a "loaner" iPhone.

    Feh!

One of my coworkers and his wife both have one - got them on debut day - and they seem happy so far. They already had Cingular/AT&T with their old phones.

I recently signed up with AT&T with plans on getting an iPhone down the road. I'm waiting at least a year. I figure they'll have most of the bugs worked out and the price should come down some. Remember, the first generation of iPods had issues too.

I've not bought one personally but we have about 10 of them at my company now. Interesting toys. I would not buy one though. The lack of PIM access, Lack of programming support (don't buy Steve Job's BS I was at the Developers Conference), and the crappy network will keep me from buying one. I can't believe that you have to sync the iphone like an ipod. Heck I can buy music on my crappy LG verizon phone if I wanted to but you can't on the iphone. Even the voice quality is pretty bad on it. When the COO of my company complains that he can't type on it and goes back to his blackberry I know something is wrong. He's the biggest gadget guy I know.

There are some positives. It is a very cool gadget and it does definitally have a wow factor to it. Browsing photos is pretty cool and the camera is very decent. I just don't see $600 in usefulness to me. If they had gone with the 3G network instead of the Edge network and offered access to the 3G for "free" ($70 service fee, not free) then I'd be more interested.

It needs to go through a few revisions.

My husband and I both have purchased the iphones. We were already on the Cingular network. We have found very few issues with the phones - The phone meets are current needs. I personally think the internet speed is fine - with all the features I have gained over my razor I am quite happy. We feel it is a phone for the average person.

If they'd just offer it without the ipod functionality, I'd be interested. 8GB is worthless to me.

For me, the lack of full Bluetooth profile support is a big let-down, which is one of the reasons I didn't buy one, even though I needed a new phone from Cingular/ATT at the time the iPhone came out. All it lets you do is connect a bluetooth earpiece. No support for stereo headphones, automobile HandsFreeLink systems, file transfers with PCs that support Bluetooth OBEX, bluetooth modem connections to use the phone as a modem for a laptop, etc. This is stuff that even 2-3 year old vanilla cell phones can do.

It also amazes me what the tech-blogger-types will call innovative to justify the iPhone... I read a review where the reviewer was amazed because with the touch of a single button, an incoming phone call can be sent to the phone handset instead of a BT earpiece, in case you misplaced the earpiece.... This was innovative a number of years ago when Sony Ericsson phones started doing it, perhaps. Not when iPhone does it....

Edit: Here's a review from one of the tech blogs: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/no-bs-iphone-review-276116.php
    They recommend waiting.

I to have seen these reviews. CNET is another one that gave it a rave review because it's a cool gadget and then in the "bad" section pretty much talked about how it is not very good as a phone and the edge network is painful. It is nice that it actively searches out wireless access and always prefers it over the edge network. Agreed that the 8gb storage is a joke as well. You are not going to fit much in the way of music and video in that space.

I do believe they will get it right though. I bet we see a 60gb version come out within the next year that includes an SDK for developers and is connected to the 3G network. Then I'd think of buying one. It's just way to expensive for me right now for what you get.

    simple... hype hype hype

Its a cool gadget... not so cool phone. When apple starts learning what is stuff you can't overlook in handsets.. and starts to learn the nitty-gritty of the mobile market.. then I expect to see some cool phones.

But even then we'll get the grandma phone, not the tweakable phone :(

For the average person? Sorry - almost $600 for a phone sounds like a lot of money to me, even with all the bells and whistles. I'm happy with my plain old cell phone.....just making calls......that's all I need, I work with computers all day.....I'm done after I leave....I like to chill too much I guess.

Maybe the best thing to come out of this will be the next generation of touch-screen iPods!

This was the concern from the beginning. No one doubted that all the "extras" would be cool, but Apple had never built a phone before. Another reason I'm waiting.

My company is evaluating the iphone to replace our crackberries. So, I'll wait to have "the man" pay for it. =-)
