We have a large maple in front of our townhouse and are concerned about the roots damaging the driveway, front stairs, etc. We've received different feedback - some arborists say the tree poses a threat (but could be a few years or longer) and other arborists say not to worry about it and leave it as-is. Have others dealt with this issue or gotten feedback/estimates from arborists? Thanks!

Every arborist shakes their head when they see our large maple tree on our tiny plot of land. Then they ask what the developers were thinking...Fortunately, the roots have not caused any damage to the sidewalk or porch and it's been 15 years.

About 8 months ago we had a video inspection conducted on our sewer pipe to see if any roots grew through but luckily no roots were visible. The tree will have to come down, eventually, and according to the HOA will have to be replaced but it doesn't have to be a maple. One good thing about it is the canopy provides nice shade during the summer heat.

Thanks for the info! Was it easy/inexpensive to do the video inspection? That sounds like a good idea. We are debating whether to go ahead and take the tree down now... but I guess it could be many years before it does any real damage (although the roots have spread pretty far already), so I hate to spend the money if we don't have to! I agree that the canopy provides nice shade. Thanks again.

The video inspection was not cheap - nearly $450 but it was necessary. I don't know what it would cost to remove a large tree and stump but I imagine it would cost more. Our roots extend under the porch and almost reach the house but so far there is no sign of damage. The tree is beginning to show signs of stress probably because the roots have no where to go. So it's only a matter of time...
