We pay for firemen to sit around waiting for fires.

Not trying to stir the pot, but I'm sure there are LOTS of 'exceptions' to your 'rule'. Over generalizing something will usually prove you wrong in the long run.

None of the teachers at BWHS are doing Work to the Rule. There are just not enough hours in the "school day" to get lessons planned, papers graded etc. As a staff we voted to not work to the rule, but instead are logging down what is done that is not during contract hours. As for teachers being home to meet their children, that happens. Matter of fact I am one of the people out the door right when the bell rings, but, IEP's are done at home, papers are graded at home, and lessons are planned at home. I choose to do those things at night after my children are in bed.

Diana, I think that shows your dedication to your career. Most people work more than the regular day, I think it's becoming a norm. They don't call them crackberrys for nothing. My day starts at 7am and very often goes past 7pm or later. Not a huge fan of those hours, but I'm happy to have a job or two.

Mr. Linux, you pot-stirrer, you! I'm thrilled to pay a fireman to be at the ready. I was trying to break it down to the least common denominator, and yes there are exceptions to every rule. But like in NYC, there are teachers being paid for not working because they are so bad, nobody will hire them. JUST AN EXAMPLE, of how the teacher's unions work. Do I think my sister should be on the dole for life? Heck no. But she'll take it if they offer it, she's got TENURE!

When we taxpayers pay for days not worked, it is not right. Think Wall Street bonuses and TARP and all the angst that came with it. (Hopefully nobody has forgotten this already) Bonus for performance, absolutely, every time.
What happens if they get carried away and take a week off with pay? Who's stopping it? It's like everything else happening right now, if the people don't watch what happens, the bureaucrats run wild.

I still say the school system owes our kids 2 days of learning!

Loudoun County students arleady get way more than 2 days more of learning than Fairfax County students.

Can we drop this subject already? It's done, we can't change it and it's ruining my holiday spirit!!

You want two extra days of learning for your kids? Take them to a museum or do something else to educate them yourself. It isn't entirely the school's responsibility, although that isn't your point, I realize. I'll have to do some checking but I'm pretty sure that most of the teachers at Dominion Trail Elementary School are there past 3pm. I know the staff is, so that's something right there. And as someone else said, they work from home during so-called off hours.

Schools are by far not the only places where people are paid for work that isn't done. It happens all the time in every profession. There are plenty of ways to waste company time...
