We love our MacBooks, but we are launching a new venture...and the FTP software we had to install on our Mac does not link up with the Windows version used by a partner company.

So we are considering getting a cheap, older PC just for this. We need internet access, WORD and EXCEL, and will need to be able to download some FTP software. Doesn't need to be fast, have any special functions, etc.

So if you have an older machine you're not using that would fit the bill, we'd be thrilled to give you some spending cash in exchange :) Thanks much!

FTP is FTP. You should be able to download a FTP program compatible with OSX. Make sure the server you're trying to connect to allows FTP connection (firewall/security). If you need to use this Windows version of ftp, look into buying Fusion from VMWare for your Mac. It allows you to run windows OS on your Mac. Another thought is try using sftp (server might only allow sftp connection). Or check to make sure the server's firewall is set appropriately to allow you to connect to it. Also make sure the userid and password is correct (caps lock off).

Or ask someone to come over and help you connect. Pay $20 to a high school student who might be able to help you.

OS shouldn't matter.. just get a better FTP client. You may be having issues with passive vs active and firewalls.

FTP is actually a very firewall unfriendly protocol - active mode vs passive mode swaps some of the connections around to make it more firewall friend for the server side vs the client side.

In short... what's the problem you are having? Try switching the option in your connection settings to toggle between active or passive and try again if the problem is you can't get files or browsing directories.

If the problem is corrupted files, verify that you are downloading in binary format.

Thank you for all the help and feedback, everyone. After several hours of working with the partnering company, we got everything to link up. Appreciate everyone's help.
