I had the taco salad and it was terrible. It was barely edible.

Mexican restaurants don't win many awards. After all, it's not gourmet enough for food snobs. :pofl:

As for taco salad, that isn't even mexican, it's truly an american invention and I dont' like any of the ones I've ever had. Next time, try an authentic mexican dish and not just tacos. True mexican food isn't spicy (it's actually really mild) and I think most people don't realize that.

I don't eat grains so no such luck. The meat had no seasoning at all. I have had wonderful taco salads out west.

Average at best, very salty and small portions.

Our family has eaten at the Sterling location several times and felt it was just okay. Not bad, but not outstanding in any way. We'll probably give it another shot because it's so close and we haven't found another Mexican restaurant nearby that we really like.

We were just in Greensboro, NC and ate at a place called Rio Grande that was pretty good. It isn't the same Rio Grande/Uncle Julio's as the chain, but the food was pretty good and the sauces were tasty and a little different in a good way.

The chain Rio Grande is my favorite (wish I knew how they spiced the fajita meat!!). Maybe that's more tex-mex than authentic mexican but it sure is good!

Not a fan. The food lacked any real flavor. Doesn't need to be spicy/hot but should be have some authentic flavors that make it special. The salsa is just bland.

Service was pretty terrible. The waitress took our order, someone else brought the food. We didn't see the waitress again till it was time for the check. Glad we didn't need anything else.

Hate to have to make the trip back to Herndon for the Tortilla Factory, but the food is better and is priced a lot less.

Poorly seasoned meat? Bland salsa? Barely edible food? I think that a few of you folks must be visiting Los Toltecos in some kind of alternate universe. I've eaten at their Sterling restaurant many times and have always had a satisfactory outcome. On Friday I made my first trip to the Broadlands location, and the experience was similarly delightful. The food was hot and flavorful, the chips were fresh, the salsa was zesty, and the service was good. Viva Los Toltecos!

    Lo
Great food is great food regardless of the cuisine style. I've had simply fantastic mexican food where the meat is tender and flavorful, the tortillas are fresh, the salsa is picant, full of vibrant herbs like cilantro and various peppersand fresh tomatoes, and it inspires you to bring others. Have never HAD that experience in LoCo with mexican food, but I would recommend the purple taco truck in sonoma to every one on earth!

Why go to a mexican restaurant? Almost everything on the menu comes in or with tortillas. Corn is a very big part of mexican cuisine.

I just get so tired of everyone slamming every new restaurant in Ashburn. Not only was I born in Texas and have eaten at many mexican restaurants, we've also eaten in some of the best in San Diego and it's all pretty similar. Real mexican food is not particularly spicy.

I don't choose a mexican restaurant by it's salsa. If I did, I'd be eating at Baja Fresh every day.

The fact is, Los Toltecos are extremely popular and are full during most dinner times. We've had to wait in Sterling for a table when going after 6 pm. I do think people expect a gourmet experience on a beer budget.

I go because I have people in my family who do eat grains. There should be a flavorful option for me too. If they serve a taco salad, they can serve one that has flavor.

I lived in Texas for 20 years and love mexican food but since moving to Ashburn haven't found a nearby family-owned mexican restaurant I really like. The ones I've tried are okay but nothing to write home about. One thing that I've noticed recently is the difference between sauce that tastes like it came out of a can and one that is made from fresh or dried peppers. So while mexican food doesn't have to be spicy, it should have some good flavor to it and not be bland.

A family member sent us some tamales from a place in Fort Worth and I made my own sauce for them (although traditionally tamales don't have sauce on them). Normally when making enchiladas at home I use the canned sauce but the homemade one was pretty good! Here's the recipe:

Oh, and the house smelled fantastic after roasting the peppers!

Ask for their hot sauce (not one that is in a prepackaged bottle).
I really like the hot sauce they bring out on a small bowl.

I've never had fajitas that come close to the steak fajitas at Rio Grande. I don't care if they're authentic. I found a marinade that's really good and somewhat reminds me of Rio Grande but like you said not really authentic since it has soy sauce. For me the key is to use skirt steak for the beefy flavor (It's pricey though). I'm making it tonight actually. Mmmmmm, I'm already hungry.

What I've heard is a mix of soy sauce and pineapple juice. I made that once and it was good - teriyaki-ish - but not quite the same.

I will readily admit that boasting about the quality of Mexican food in Ashburn is a little like bragging about the BBQ in Nantucket. But no matter your opinion of Los Toltecos, you have to give them credit for being consistent. So many restaurants in this area – including those formerly in the very spot now occupied by LT – have suffered from horrendous inconsistency. Love 'em or hate 'em, Los Toltecos delivers pretty much the same each and every time.

Had lunch at Los Toltecos today and thought it was pretty good. (disclaimer: I also like Anita's and even Taco Bell!) $20 for two lunch specials and two iced teas.

The decor was Cancun Gift Shop.

I'd go again if we were in the mood for Mexican.

The Rio Grande in Reston used to have "goat night" on Thursdays. You could get roasted (or grilled, can't remember) fajitas or a combo of goat and beef.

Does anyone know if they still have them? I recall they were really good!

Not bad, good food, great beer, a good crowd. Close my eyes and I could have been in Mexico, except the food was better!
