Does anyone know what it means when the cursor hesitates on your screen, almost like it's sticking? Have an optical mouse, but thinking it's not the mouse but possibly my system(memory problem??) Also get hesitation typing on the keyboard...lag time between characters.

Yes, the hard drive light seems to be cranking a lot...I've done a virus scan and ran my spyware..seems a little better. Getting a fatal exception error also every once in awhile - googling it seems to produce ramblings about a registry conflict of some sort, but I'm not sure how to check that.

Windows 98 - just curious but how old is your computer? If it is an older model, you may have a smaller hard drive that is nearing capacity if you save alot of stuff or have installed alot of programs. Recommend you also defrag if you have not done so.

In addition, are your mouse and keyboard cordless? If so, change the batteries

FWIW ... if the machine is more than 5 years old ... and most that were loaded with Win98 are ... it may be time to replace it with something newer and faster.

Dell is practically giving away Pentium 4 2.8Ghz machines with 17" CRT, 512 MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, Win XP SP2, mouse and keyboard for under $500 !!

Good point about the age of the computer. The IRS puts the life of a computer at five years, but other experts say it is closer to three years, not based on hardware failure but rather based on staying compatible with the state of the art.

If you do decide to replace the computer, you may want to switch to a Mac. Aside from the standard advantages of a more consistent user interface, no viruses, and no spyware/adware, there are also advantages in getting integrated apps for music, photos, and movie creation.

The Mac Mini is one way to go. It will use your existing monitor and keyboard/mouse. Most likely though you have the older PS2 style mouse and keyboard (as opposed to USB ones). In that case you'll need to grab a PS2 to USB adapter.

The Mini, however, is not a serious workhorse computer. It does fine for the average person who just wants to do e-mail, web surfing, word processing, spreadsheet, and basic music and digital photo stuff. It can also burn CDs and DVDs. If your needs are more demanding then you'll need to go for a full size desktop Mac.

Just follow the old tried-and-true method of getting the right computer: pick the software first and then find the computer that can run it.

    Enjoy!

Thanks, all...again. Yes, it's an older HP and guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get a new and improved model....my bettter half keeps downloading his GPS software updates...arghhhh, no wonder! But we have a college-bound youngin' that needs a new computer, too. So I'm trying to keep this baby kickin! I use a MAC and PC at work...and both have their pros and cons (I won't open that can!....) [}:)]

With the prices Dell is offering, you can get your kid a nice desktop, and yourself one too for under 1600 ...

wait for the right timing and get good machines for 400-500 w/monitor.

Monitor the front page at www.slickdeals.com daily for new offers.

Dell always has combinations of % off and rebates that comes to heafty discounts on machines that are plenty good for home desktops.

I have a brand new flat monitor screen and new optical mouse...is it possible just to buy a new hard drive? Can I keep my HP keyboard, etc., or would I have to get an HP?

Just buy a new cheap computer w/ no monitor, mouse and keyboard...your computer is pretty useless.

What you call the 'hard drive' is the computer itself. If you buy from Dell, you can buy just a computer. I'm not sure if you can tell them not to include a keyboard and mouse, but no matter, any standard keyboard will work. I don't know of any requirement that you have to have an HP computer to use an HP keyboard, unless there are special keys that they have installed, even then, you would need to use special software to access those keys.

FWIW ... I've got an original IBM keyboard, circa 1995, I've been using for the past 10 years. I've swapped out 3 computers during that time, but kept the keyboard.

On buying a new computer, most machines you buy at Best Buy or Sam's, etc, are bundled with a monitor, so you'll wind up paying for something you won't need.

You could even use that monitor, keyboard, and mouse on a Mac. ;)
