I am looking to find a few referrals for an orthopaedic doctor that specializes in backs. I desperately need to get my mom in, and she wants to go to someone that works with both Loudoun in addition to another hospital. If she needs surgery, she wants to do it somewhere other than Loudoun, but I need her to have the appointments somewhere close-by (Loudoun or Reston would be great).

    Thank you!

I'm happy to hear someone received relief at the Center for Advanced Orthopedics & Pain Management . However, I had an absolutely horrible experience with Drs. Moshirfar, Hassasian and most of their staff. I have a herniated L4/L5 disc, and when I was referred to Dr. Moshifar, he had become the 12th doctor I had seen in a year in a half. Despite numerous epidural injections and a variety of medication cocktails, I was still in pain. The only staff member there who is credible is Pat Iwanik, the fabulous lady who handles appointment scheduling.

Pat ultimately referred me to a wonderful physiatrist in Sterling, Dr. Nino Dobrovic. After a thorough, 2-hour consultation and physical examination, I was diagnosed with sacroiliitis: a permanent shifting of the pelvis, typical in many women both during and after pregnancy, which causes horrendous and incessant pain in the SI joint. Since Dr. Dobrovic, I have been pain free. However, I've developed a lot of skeptisism and animosity for many of the spine surgeons out there, including those at the Center for Advanced Pain Management. Essentially, their motto was "If I can't cut you open, I have no time for you." Both Moshirfar and Hassasian constantly interrupted me while I provided what I believe was crucial information necessary for my diagnosis, patronized me, and ultimately dismissed me as a patient, since I was still in such a state of severe pain and they had run out of answers. And ultimately, they misdiagnosed me, for a condition that was easily determined by Dr. Dobrovic. After receiving my diagnosis, I read about it on-line, and it seemed so obvious to me. But not to Hasssasian and Moshifar.

I am a huge fan of Dr. Dobrovic, and recommend him highly. He changed my life, as I had fallen into deep depression during my struggle with chronic pain, not being able to care for my two young children as I had before, and was bed-ridden for many evenings once my husband came home from work.

I wish you and your mother the very best of luck, and hope that she finds some relief. I know how much chronic pain impacts one's life. Dr. Dobrovic can be reached at (703) 444-2592. Explain your story to Josephine, his nurse and assistant who I guarantee will be extremely helpful and sensitive to your situation. Best of luck!

+1 on Center For Advance Orthopedics, I've been a long time patient of their (6+ years).

I much prefer Dr. Cook bedside manner and have found Dr. Moshifar can come across as cold. Call me weird, but I like to have a some warm and fuzzes if a Dr plans to cut me open.

You found Dr Cook to be warm and fuzzy??? My experience with him he was abrupt and rude when I had to deal with him when my then 3 year old broke both bones in her wrist. He is very technical and factual which has its merits but not someone I would send my mom too.

I go to Dr. Mike Poulin, He has an office of RT & in the builidng nest to the church with the big steeple. He has another office in sterling. His partner is Dr. Seery. www.poulinchiropractic.com , He is very nice, Happy, and chatty.

I've been going to them for months now. Dr Moshifar, had diagnosed me with degenerative disc disease in the L4-L5 range. great. Then he sent me to therapy. It was ok, but finally I had to go to a chiropractor as I was getting no relief.

Dr. Poulin looked at my Xray he saw the Degeneration and immediatlely found the other issue - which Moshifar didn't! On my right side I have a transverse - which means, folks, that L1 is fused to my hip. So most of what i was doing in therapy was bad for that. And now, i am pain free! I see him on a monthly basis for a tune up, unless i get out of whack and SI jacks off the the left. When he saw the tranverse, he knew immediately that he should not adjust me laying on my side. Other Chiros in the past did just that - even with the xray.

Also he sells great flip flops that have your personal foot molds in them. You step on a scanner and it can see where your pressure points are and makes the footbed to fix the empty areas. All of his staff wears them and coos about them.

Koasdad destroys pillows with his big head, so I got Latex pillow for him back in November and it still does the job, which by now he'd normally need a new one. He also got that there. THe Docs, do NOT push that, they just have it if there if you think you might want stuff. HE sells Bio-Freexe, which is nice to have when you leave the place rather than having to stop somewhere on the way home.

He was trained in the Cox technigue for spinal manipulation and the adjusting bed is great. NOt flat, nor the thing that you stand on and ift comes down.

I go in and first lay stomach down and get the nice muscle massager thing with a heat pad on top to ease my muscles. then i go to get adusjted, and sometimes go to the roller bar platform that has a cooling thing for your back. feels like you're getting a great massage. Insurance covers it.

As far as Dr. Cook, maybe it was an off day. He did the surgery on my left knee this past July and was very nice and took the time to answer all my questions. I thought he was much better than Dr. Lower's office, where i had been going for years and getting no relief...just shots in the knee. Todd gave me therapy and he was great.
