Where Anothai was, there is a banner advertising a new Indian restaurant - Saffron. We like Banjara in Ashburn Village a lot. It will be interesting to see how this compares.

Right next to Wiger Orthodontics in the Southern Walk Plaza. It's in the same 'row' as Glory Days. Southern Walk Plaza is the plaza with the McDonalds, Taco Bell, Walgreen's, etc...

I suspect that it will be hard for most restaurants to survive in that shopping center until there is a little more commercial development in the area and those offices provide a lunch business. Much to my surprise Glory Days seems to do alright though IMO it is too noisy and has mediocre food.

It has probably been mentioned on some thread but what is supposed to be built at some point across Wynridge from Southern Walk Plaza?

Senior housing complex (about 85 units), townhouses (around 26), and a daycare.

Are they scheduled to start building soon? The sprinklers in the common areas seem to be working well lately and that area is the greenest I have seen since Van Metre finished building out the Southern Walk townhouses/houses.

banjara is the only indian restaurant to survive and even do well in ashburn over the past few years... let's see what saffron has in store for us! I wish them luck.

Don't know for sure. Doubt it for the senior complex. I imagine they will build the townhouses fairly soon. Residential sells quickly.

    Ok, thanks.

That's a nice place to start an Indian restaurant. Hope it's much better than all other Indian restaurants in Ashburn area.

I recently tried 'Persis' Indian restuarant at Ice Rink Plaza and i liked thier food. Another Indian restaurant that i absolutely love and is close to Ashburn is 'Rangoli' in South Riding Plaza. I still wish that 'Anothai' was still around.

I know this sounds a little ignorant but could someone describe Indian food for me? I've had Indian food once, liked it, but it was take out at a company shindig (hard to believe that didn't show up in spellcheck red)!

I'm thinking I would probably enjoy it but don't know what to expect and have a family that is somewhat conservative when it comes to eating out.

The presentation can be somewhat like a Chinese place in that you always get rice with it (Basmati rice though, which I like much better) and the best way to do it is "family style" where you order a few different dishes and share around the table. They usually have chicken, beef, lamb, vegetarian, and seafood dishes so you can get a good sampling around the table. You order bread separately - and you HAVE to get the bread, soooo good.

The spices and cooking methods can be totally different. Like a Chinese place, you can get a range of "heat" in your choices, but the flavors more commonly use curry, cumin, and coriander as spices - peppers too, obviously, for heat. They also have great sauces in a lot of their dishes that tend to be tomato and/or yogurt based.

I also really enjoy their appetizers. A common favorite is the Samosa, which is a crispy sort of dumpling with potatoes and other vegetables inside. That's one that isn't spicy generlaly and even kids enjoy.

We are also a big fan of Banjara. But yes, it would be helpful to have another restaurant try to make it. We will still miss American Flatbread no matter what though.

GREAT description! i would add that butter chicken is a great introduction to indian food- not too overpowering with unfamiliar spices, and a simple, delicious tomato cream sauce that kids typically enjoy. tandoori is another good gentle option to get to know Indian cuisine. check out Banjara- they have a wonderful menu that goes from one spectrum to the other or flavors and spices.

Most indian restaurants in the area offer a buffet for Lunch all days. You could try that out to sample different foods at one time.
