The new post office branch near the Safeway is now open. Counter service is from 11 to 2 and 3 to 5 M-F, and 9 to 12 on Sat. Counter is located through a separate door beyond boxes. Box rental to begin soon.

I'll stick with Postal Masters over on the other side of the Safeway. They have all the same services but also provide customer profile data and choices. I like being able to check FedEx and UPS rates and services against USPS before choosing.

BTW, how much did that newly installed flag holder cost the taxpayers?

Nothing. The USPS is not funded by our tax dollars.

Psedo, then they should look at how they are handling their finances and the choices they are making. There is a national interest in maintaining their viability.

But they hold a monopoly on our mail services - they are funded by having a monopoly on our mail spending dollars. Hence we have a vested interest in ensuring they are viable and efficient.. else, our only choice for mail will cost more.

I just dropped off some packages at the new post office. Quick, helpful service.

It's possible that the USPS is trying to become more "viable" and "efficient" but many of those plans are being stonewalled by Congress.

I would blame the unions way before I would blame Congress. I have been inside the USPS and worked within it as a contractor; the stronghold that the unions have would make your jaw drop...

I work for the government. I blame completely incompetent and bloated management before I blame "unions".
Example...in my workplace, a group of us was formed to improve facility workflow and recommend operational improvements.
Management wanted a "professional" reorganization group to "facilitate" the meetings.
They bring in multiple people who know nothing about what we do, we waste days and days getting them to understand what we do, and then they basically rewrite our exact recommendations.
To date, for about 25 days of meetings, they have billed $500,000.
    Absolutely mind-numbing.

Sorry Cliff, but until you have worked within the USPS, you can't really understand the things going on between USPS and the unions within it. The unions might work in your organization, but it's very different than what's going on at the USPS. Remember, the USPS is NOT a government organization, as much as people try to claim it is in some capacity.

The USPS has a LOT more employees than your organization, and a lot more 'blue collar' jobs than yours as well.

I'm not saying Congress shouldn't be blamed, I'm just saying that until you've worked within the USPS structure and seen and dealt with the dynamics between the organization and the unions, you can't comprehend the impact that those unions really have on the fiscal issues the USPS is facing today.

The US Post Office in the Safeway Center is closed today from 2p-3p for lunch. Unbelievable, no wonder they're going bust. Only a federal monopoly could do this, long live the free market - went to mailboxes etc instead and won't be going back to USPS anytime soon.

I believe this is mandated by the Union agreement... As I mentioned before, in my opinion, a lot of the issues with the USPS can be somewhat linked to the Unions and the agreements that are in place.

having a lunch is no biggie... not having the required staff to stay open while your staff has lunch doesn't sound like a union problem to me. The other post offices didn't close down for lunch. This is just poor business practice.

Linux, I don't think unions are the problem as much as the government regulation requiring a post office within the Broadlands zip code. So I understand. When the post master was asked why he was putting the shop where it is, he said, because he needed a footprint in the zip. So if this is all about meeting a regulation rather than actually providing a money making service it all makes ridiculous sense. It's obvious they don't have the funds to make it viable, nor the initiative. Just get a footprint, give it minimal staff, cut the hours to a minimum and let it sit. Congress gets the happy check off and the USPS continues to flounder.

Perhaps they are not staffed up yet. When I went there was only a single counter person.

This is their "soft" opening. Was told they will have an "official opening, with expanded hours, in a few weeks.
Don't know how "expanded" they will be.
Given that I haven't seen any other Post Offices around here that have this odd schedule, I doubt it is a "Union agreement."

Guess you haven't frequented the post office at Global Foods! Hang around long enough and the tumbleweed comes rolling through!

Well it sure makes a lot of sense to make sure the flag is up before adequate staff is on duty.
