Guess what I got in the mail today? A little notice from Verizon entitled, "The Verizon FIOS Countdown Has Begun!"

"...Verizon FIOS is coming to your neighborhood... FIOS should be available for you to order within the next few months."

So, I guess we're getting close!

Well they just marked the utilities in my entire neighborhood and will be digging and laying cable shortly. We have a big shot that works at the verizon building on my street and his yard was marked upped special compared to his neighbors on each side. I wonder if that means they are going to put ours in at the speed of light.

here near demott/center post they have been sitting splicing fiber [IMG] for the past few days... hopefully this is a good sign... looks like union guys,... hopefully last step(s) =) I think I'll be going for the 15/2 tier.

I will say that I've been more than happy with Adelphia/Cox in terms of speed and uptime.... I just want something cheaper (currently 67.95 no TV cx). I guess I could call and renegotiate to the 6 mos for 19.99 month deal to tide me over.

You're talking about FiOS. Everyone gets theirs "at the speed of light". :)

I started the thread when I was trying to make a decision on which service to go with for HDTV service. I ended up signing a two year contract with DirecTV. I think my commitment will be just about done by the time FiOS arrives.

I'm hoping that at the very least, it will give some negotiating leverage with Comcast and Satellite. A guy at work said that when Verizon was installing FiOS in his neighborhood, the cable company was dropping rates and improving speed to compete.

Oh, they've been doing that for a while now. The month-to-month rates haven't changed (most have gone up each year), since those are regulated by the County, etc. The deals you're seeing are for signing a 1-2 year contract with Comcast. Also, read the fine print; the low rates are only good for the first few months, and then go back to 'regular' rates for the remaining period of the contract. Compare those regular rates with FiOS and you'll notice you're paying more.

I've been comparing both Comcast and FiOS and I can't find any reason at this point to go with Comcast, short of them beating the FiOS price by 50% or something (yea, like that will ever happen). The quality of the FiOS TV signal (MUCH less compression) is enough to sway me over to FiOS. And not having to pay extra for some of the HD channels is another bonus.

Frankly, I'm just plain tired with Comcast. I'm with Dish Network right now (which I DESPISE, btw), and my contract ended over 2-3 years ago, so I'm free to go anywhere. I use Comcast for Internet; while the speeds are great, the $68/month pricetag isn't. I'm ready to go with FiOS because of the better speeds, the better 'bundle' savings, and the better TV image quality.

My mom just had FiOS installed in her place in NJ. She said the TV (non HD) quality was great versus their local cable. I'll be interested to hear what our early adopters think of picture quality on their HD sets.

I heard that Verizon was having problems with their DVR box. Has anyone heard how it compares to those offered by Comcast/DirecTV/Dish? I'm sure that it can't be as good as the Tivo box (but I'm not prepared to pay $300 + $10+/month for a DVR subscription on top of the fees from the provider).

I own a Tivo and a Dish DVR. The Dish DVR is would probably serve better as a litterbox than a DVR in my opinion...

A co-worker of mine decided that he didn't like some of the things he had read about regarding the Verizon DVR's and went with a Tivo HD with a couple Cablecards. I had no idea that FiOS supported Cablecards, so it's an intriguing option for me now.

Want to see the difference in image quality when it comes to Comcast HD and FiOS HD? Take a look at this thread, with the images for an apples-to-apples comparaison; it will blow your mind!

They use the same one as comcast just with different software. The models change periodically - but its nothing radically different. People I know all have the dual tuner Motorolla 6xxx boxes just like comcast. They have the same issues - some work great, some get sluggish, some are crashy, etc.

I have that box and have issues every now and then. I find that it helps to 'give the box a break' once a month by unplugging for one night. Just yesterday my DVR was showing 100% (no space left to record), but I knew there should be plenty. I unplugged it overnight and now it's showing only 11%. Sometimes I feel like the box is running on Windows :pofl:

FiOS is almost here. I know many people that have FiOS in other parts of Virginia and Maryland and they all love it! Finally, the end is near and I can say adios to Comcast...

Miss Utility tagged my yard and Verizon put door tags on our house but I haven't seen any construction. Does anyone know how long they'll take to start construction?

My guess is if you got door tags and your property is marked, something's going to happen within 48-72 hours, depending on weather.

You would think that. But it's been a couple of weeks. Sort of weird.
The tags are starting to fade.

Are you sure they haven't been digging and burying cable on your street or an adjoing street? They didn't tag our door until the work was well underway. They also put down sod where they tore up the grass all around our property. I'm still waiting for a Verizon salesperson to contact me though...

Verizon never contacted us. Basically once your yard has been torn up, it's available. I just happened to check online a couple of weeks after our yard was torn up and found out it was available now. Signed up that day and got it installed one week later!

I have the same problem.. Streets around me are listed, but mine isnt. What would that mean? Called the number that verizon has provided to check on status, and i was told "I have no information for your street whatsoever"...not sure what that meant.

FYI, I guess our street would be an "end node", and they havent gotten to any such streets?

On another note - anybody with townhomes in Broadlands have their homes tagged by Verizon or have Fios service?
