Walking around Broadlands North, I have noticed many of the roofs have black streaks on them. These streaks primarily face north.

Does anyone know what this is? Could it be a black mold or other fungus?

It's probably algae. Northern exposure creates the perfect environment for it.

It really doesn't damage the asphalt shingles because algae doesn't take root, but it can trap water which can cause other damage. They make algae resistant asphalt shingles now which contain copper granules. The cleaners can actually cause more damage.

We had ours done 2 years ago. Very happy. It's actually a chlorine mixture they use. Very safe.
