    NRA Firearms Training Course

As most of you have seen in previous posts, I am a supporter of the NRA. Well it also happens to be that I am an NRA Certified Instructor as well. I know that there are others who support the 2nd amendment that live in the Broadlands area. I wanted to let anyone interested know that I will be conducting an NRA Basic Pistol class in Fairfax, VA on Saturday January 19, 2008. This class is 10 hours long and starts at 8am and ends at 7pm, a 1 hour lunch break is included, but food is not provided. What this class does is teaches you how to safely handle and operate a handgun. This clas does not focus on 1 particular type of handgun, but rather covers all the different action types in regards to semi-automatic pistol and revolvers. You do not need to bring anything but yourself, note taking materials, and a positive attitude to this class. The cost is $100 and covers all the materials needed. Range time is included in this class, so it will allow the instructors time to see if you are understanding the material being provided. This class does meet the requirements to obtain a Concealed Carry Permit in the state of VA. If you would like further information about this you can pm me here on the forum or send me an email directly at basicpistol@yahoo.com

As an added incentive to anyone from this forum who takes this class, I will also provide you with an additional 1 hour worth of private range shooting that you can use anytime you want.

Admins if this is n the wrong area please feel free to move to the appropriate forum.

This brings up something I've been meaning to ask. My parents have gifted me a .44 Mag rifle, and I have not been able to easily identify a local gun range. I don't shoot all that often, but it would be nice to send some lead downrange every once in a while.

The only one I know about is Blue Ridge Arsenal over by the UPS Depot. I am certain cncbpr can help identify others.

However, I must say this was THE major reason I sold off my hand guns. Good rnages are so few & far between. Then there are the ranges that do not let you bring in out side ammo and charge OUTRAGOUS prices for ammo (**cough** Clark Brothers **cough**).

Hrmmm... do I smell a business opportunity here?

The NRA range is a great place to shoot. All lanes are 50yds and I don't believe there is a restriction on caliber size like some of the other ranges. You can bring your own ammo and the lanes are reasonable at $12/hr I believe.

Well I guess I can put this out there now. For those of you that don't know I actually work for the National Rifle Association. I work in our Education and Training Division. In response to the ranges in the area, unless you belong to Izaak Walton , there is Blue Ridge Arsenal and NRA Range here at HQ in Fairfax. The NRA Range is rated for .50 Caliber, but only so much abuse can be taken with that cartridge, so we limit it to .468. Now we also do not allow incindeary rounds or tracers. If you have to ask what those are, then you most likely don't buy them. Cost is $12 per hour, unless you show up with an employee like myself, then we can generally get you in for $10. Now I do have a good rapport down there at the range, so from time to time I can get you in for less than $10, but not all the time. NRA range is a state of the art range with a waterbackstop to help keep lead dust down. I am usually more than happy to go shoot with anyone. If you want private lessons I do that as well. $25 per hour. I will provide guns. Ammo for a .22 caliber is provided as well, but other calibers are not. Range fees are not covered as well.

Trust me the thought has gone through my mind plenty of times. Not much in LOCO in regards to ranges close by.

I've got a black powder muzzleloader that I've been meaning to take to a range for a while now. I know the NRA range does not allow black powder and I thought my only option was Clark Brothers. I'm not even sure if I can fire it at Clark Brothers as it's .50 caliber but I've not checked. Looks like Blue Ridge Arsenal does not accept it either.

I'd imagine you'd not want to shoot a muzzleloader indoors (Blue Ridge/NRA) even if it were allowed.

i didn't know blue ridge was indoors. well that explains it not being allowed there as well. Clark Brothers doesn't post their range rules online. I need to just call them.

I'm not certain, but I am pretty sure Clarke Brothers doesn't allow it either. Most, if not all Indoor ranges don't allow it.

Yes Clark Brothers is an outdoor range. What I am refering to is the amount of space needed to fire a 50 cal. It's been awhile so I am not sure what their range layout is like anymore. Their is some info on their services page. I just got off the phone with them and there is no caliber restrictions with Black Powder.

Is there an age requirement to shoot? I have an almost 15-year-old that I'd like to teach responsibility gun ownership to. Can he shoot or even take lessons with you at the NRA range as long as I accompany him? Thanks much.

Given this at the bottom of your posts ("A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"), I don't think this is a big surprise!

    Silence.

The NRA does not have an age requirement or restriction for training. We leave that totally up to the parents to decide. On the NRA Range however, if you are under the age of 18 you do need to have an adult on the range with them. I would have no problem if you wanted your child to go through this class as shooting is an activity the whole family can enjoy.

Wow - we either have the beginning of the "Broadlands Gun & Mah Jongg Club" or the "Loudounn Guard, First Broadlands Divison." :D
