I just got a parking ticket on Village drive for expired tags. The tags were expired, but that's because I never got the registration in the mail. Perhaps it got lost, I don't know what happened. What surprises and disappoints me is this kind of over aggressive enforcement on a parked car.

I believe you can still get one while in your driveway as it is in open view.

Also, considering there are at least 3-4 Loudoun County police officers (that I have noticed) that live down Village Drive, it may have just been noticed while one was driving by.

Why is it aggressive? The car's tags were expired. This isn't a secondary offense.

The county will ticket cars parked that don't have tags or current registration. People get ticketed all the time for failing to register their car in VA. The #1 thing they keep an eye on are people who don't register their car in VA and try to keep out of state tags (avoiding VA tax and fees).

The tags were expired, you got a ticket and why do you think you shouldn't? You walk by you car most days and had to see that the it was expired. Is it the post office's fault? Should police just not enforce that rule?

The local police make their rounds at night and into the morning checking vehicles. You learned the hard way that keeping your registration current is a necessary evil.

I'm glad that police enforce this. However, I know for a fact a guy who has a FL license plate and has lived here for over FOUR years! He still has his FL license plates. I've always wondered why he hasn't been busted yet.

If you didn't get the registration, you should have called for another one. OR, you can pay online very easily. In this day and age, there really is no excuse for late registrations.

About 20 years ago, I got ticketed for expired tags while my car was parked right out front of my house. It was in the street. I was told that if it had been in my driveway, I wouldn't have been ticketed. So I put my car in the driveway until my new tags got here. My new tags were on the way, but didn't get to me in time, although I had ordered them at the beginning of the month. I went to court and won this fight, just because I had proof of when I paid for the tags.

Becuase there is absolutely nothing illegal about parking an out of state car on a public road. However, it is illegal to have expired tags on a public road.

Is the guy active duty military? I think all states allow an exception for active military folks. I kept my Texas plate and residency (no state income tax) my entire time in the military through a ton of moves around the country. Florida and Tennessee are two other states that I think also have no state income tax and military folks usually keep their plates and residency there while on active duty if possible.

And military people who are based out of another state don't have to change their plates.

Just FYI the military stationed here do not have to register their cars here. They can leave them registered in a home state.

When you move into VA, you are required to register your vehicle within 30 days, which means you would get VA tags. There are some exceptions, however.

Yes, I know military don't have to register their vehicles. This guys is no military. I laugh just thinking about him trying to do anything labor intensive.

Not true. You can be a college student, non-resident, millitary, or any other out of stater and keep your domicile state tags. You don't need to reregister. Trust me, many people have vacation homes in VA and keep a car here that is registered in another state. Your residence determins where your car is registered. On the flip side, you can even have a VA car in another state for an unlimited amount of time (even without state inspection sticker) as long as you do not drive it back into the reistered state. It's all listed on the DMV website.

If they live in Florida, why in world would they register in VA. Like you said, when you MOVE to VA. They did not move to va. They have established residency in FL.

Report it - and if it's not valid, the problem will go away. If is valid and they don't need to change it, then you can rest in peace :)

Registration - but public or private surface won't let you escape property taxes. Even if your car is garaged out of view, you are required to pay property taxes on it. Any vehicle here for more than 30 days is required to pay property tax.. or registered to an address here. No sticker = suspect.

That is not true. You can park an out of state vehicle in VA (County) without paying VA taxes. Your residency determines where your car is registered and you do not pay property taxes if you are not a VA resident.

No, it is very much true. Property tax is collected on vehicles in the jurisdiction, not registration. Come here as a temporary contractor from out of state, park in your driveway for more than 60 days, and risk getting fined.

You can also get a ticket or warning for not having a Loudoun County Sticker. When my girlfriend moved in with me she came from Fairfax with legal VA tags. She parks in the driveway but was still cited for not having a Loudoun sticker. Luckily (for her) the citation was only a warning the first time and she did get the Loudoun sticker.
